HELP WBW - OPEN BETA

December last year I started working on a new version of WhatBoysWant. The goal of the new version was to start from scratch with a new framework. The old framework we used was CakePHP 2.x, it had a lot of limitations that gave headaches to work around. We could have looked into CakePHP 3.x or even 4.x but this would have resulted starting from scratch too. After some research and trying out different frameworks we decided to start using Laravel for its flexibility, widely used and vibrant community behind it.

After almost a year of constant development, we are proud to announce the beta of WhatBoysWant “alpha”. Yes, we dubbed the new software “Alpha”.

”Alpha” will give us the ability to quickly develop new features, crush bugs faster, and overall give a better experience for the community. We already have a lot of new features on our roadmap after the initial release will go live.

To make sure “Alpha” gets a smooth release, we need to crush some bugs. So this is the part where we turn to the community to help us out finding glitches, bugs, and important missing features.

We decided to split testing into phases:

In the first phase, we will be testing the software with an empty database to weed out the most obvious bugs and missing features. Everything would be empty including the forums! So upload / post / vote to test the system.

The second phase will be testing the software with all data imported from the current live version of WhatBoysWant; This will help us determine how long it will take to migrate data, what kind of troubles we run into and the data is consistent.

How can you help? Simple by going to the alpha site and start testing the site. Try to break it and use every part of it. If you run into anything you can report it through our issue tracker.

Currently in first phase of beta testing

its an empty database, so you need to create a new account to test it. Second phase you can use the credentials you use here as all data will be imported.

The new site is looking great, wonderful work done on it so far. Easy to use and a couple of new features that are quite amazing I must say. Congrats on the great job done so far

Looks pretty good so far. Obviously can't check out all options with a blank database (search, archive, new uploads, etc.) but it seems to work quite well. Nice layout, graphics and color scheme.

So far it doesn't seem to log me out the way the original site does, but I may not have been on long enough for that to occur.

For the first phase of the testing it is easier to just have an empty database. It is easier for me to debug when something goes wrong.

The log out issue resolve in "Alpha" software, have been testing it for almost a year now. The old framework I have tried to fix it for so many times it became one big frustration. Luckily the new framework is doesn't have these issues.

The "Alpha" is way cleaner and better on smaller devices. The current wbw looks quite dated.

Status: Currently converting videos to new format... problem is that it will take about 42 days to convert everything, and that is without the web player videos. Already using 4 servers to encode. If I only had the money for some threadrippers :P

I like the format but can I ask one thing. the arrows to go to the top or bottom of the page in the old format, will they be in beta? just saves me time. Ta

They are not in the alpha.

Do you want me to add them? Never thought anybody would use them so I totally forgot. Do you use them on desktop or mobile?
