When you upload to the galleries I believe the process does remove most if not all of the metadata attached to it.
Apart from a few top line cameras its still not a widely used technology yet to mark images with GPS locations.
The iPhone 4 does it if you have turned it on.

For trials sake I just took 100 selfshot pics that were taken by people holding a iPhone and put them in Aperture. There was no gps or location metadata on them at all.

We remove all metadata from approved picture. After approval or upload all pictures will be re-encoded with higher compressiom and removal of all extra picture information to spare bandwidth and diskspace, and to ensure privacy for people uploading and contributing.
