Avatars

Seriously...why can't the avatar file size be increased? Would it really cost WBW money to go from 35,840 bytes to something like 100,000 or even 200,000? Even the size...would it kill the site to allow maybe 300x300 pixel size?

I understand the reason behind it at one time, it was to help with page load times, but even Honda is off dial up now.

I agree about the file size as 35ko is really low but increasing the pixel size would mess with the layout.
Also an avatar is supposed to be small (in pixel size). I don't like forums where all you see is a big ass avatar on the left, a giant signature at the end and 1 line of post in between

I think the file size limit should be increased, but agree that the pixel restriction should be maintained (roughly.)

You could have some really nice avatars at the current size. although, animated avatars are a little tricky to get to that size and still look nice. i do agree though, maybe not 100,000 but a little higher than what it is. hight and width should stay the same though.

I'm just throwing some ideas out there. 300x300 I agree is too big, but we certainly could go wider than the current 100. As for file size, again just throwing it out there. I really don't think it makes much a difference if its 50,000 or 100,000 bytes in terms of load times, but trying to make an animated avatar under 50,000 bytes is almost impossible.

the reason i am for leaving the dimensions of the avatar is because it flows really well with the layout of the site (although i cant see them right now due to being on my phone). however if it was raised slightly to maybe 150 wide and 350 long, i dont see that being a very big issue but im not a coder or anything so i dont know how much that would throw off the layout. youre right about animated avatars, its very tough to get something to look nice with the current restrictions

Problem with very large avatars is loading on mobile devices... Unless I can think about something to lower bandwidth for mobile devices;

yeah, they don't load on my iphone either.

Even if the file size was tripled, thats nothing compared to the picture and video file sizes. Seems to me on a page full of pictures, the avatars would be the smallest files? IDK...maybe I'm wrong.

On mobile, or my tablet, My avatars don't load unless I request the desktop site, even then load time is minimal...

Well, I dunno if "display:none;" images are loaded on mobile devices, that is something I have to look into first... if this is thru I can look into making them larger.

Check out the picture. This member somehow has a larger (wider) avatar. It doesn't mess up the page format, and personally I think that width looks good. Why couldn't we do something like this?, and also perhaps increase the file size a touch? On a pure design level...the avatar should be at least as wide as the level progress bar, I never really noticed it before, but the more I look at it, the more it looks unbalanced.

The avatar on the pic is too large, it doesn't mess up with the layout but doesn't look good imo.
I agree with you that it could be the width of the level bar though.
I still consider that avatars should not be really big and will keep my square one ^^

The filesize for avatars is going to be increased to 250kb, next patch
