Hi there!
I love this site, there's nothing quite like browsing for some nookie in the hot afternoon...
except maybe getting some
However, three small ideas popped into my head, and started demanding attention. After a furious battle, I had to give in and come here to express them for all the WBW-world to see.
To those of you who wonder the realms of P2P, this following idea might be familiar, but I have a feeling it might help with bandwidth and disk space issues, on both the server and uploader side. Let me give you an example:
Person A has a picture he wants to upload, but he isn't really 100% sure that it isn't already on the site. So, he/she goes to the upload page and browses for the pic from his/her private folder on his/her harddisk. He/she then clicks on Submit, but instead of directly sending the pic to the server, the click starts up a small Java program that generates an MD4 or MD5 hash from the file(s) selected, and sends that to server. The server then checks its list of hashes to see if the pic can already be found on the server.
If not, the server accepts the file and adds it to the checkup queue. If the hash is found, the server sends out a reply telling why the pic was rejected (already on site, copyrighted pic, etc.)
I haven't found a Java applet that does this yet, but I'm sure that coming up with one shouldn't be difficult. This would also ease the strain on the mods, who so bravely strain their eyes so we could enjoy the services of WBW in the future as well.
(Edit: I did some Googling, and found several promising hits, that could at least be refined into the applet I described earlier. I have no real hardcore experience with Java, but I'm willing to take a poke at it if no-one else will.)
The second idea is probably one that would pretty much eat up all the bandwidth left over from the hash system, and then some. I'm talking, ofcourse, about an IRC server. Now, I know, bandwidth costs a huge load of money, but maybe I could give in enough to just agree to have a channel on a public network. Just as long as the network is some other than IRCnet. No offense, but we're not in the Wild Wild West anymore.
The third and last idea is not so much an idea as it is a product of my anal retentiveness towards the correct grammar and spelling of the English language. When a picture has no comments, the text "There is no comment on this picture" is displayed. Close enough, guys, but better versions do include the following:
- There are no comments for this picture
- This picture has no comments yet
- No-one has commented on this picture yet
etc.
If you want, I can become the semi-official spell-checker for this site, and no, I don't really have much of a life, so I won't mind.
(Edit: I found some more spelling and grammar errors, I'm willing to divulge those to the mods if they are interested in such matters.)
If you have managed to read this far, thanks for the effort, any and all comments are welcome. If you have the strength left in you, that is.
