But there is already censorship. You said it that exact same post, "remember to keep it civil.", that is censorship. Removing something of zero value to a community is hardly censorship, it's efficiency. Less bandwidth, CPU/memory usage (on both sides, server and end user), quicker load times, etc. I believe there was/is a rule in place that image comments are not for initiating a discussion between users, so there really isn't any utilitarian value for comments as they currently exist as they are not supposed to be allowed to initiate a discussion between users. Also, comments have been censored in the past. Users have been banned for commenting things like 'That is one ugly girl' or speculating that an image might be a transgender person. So, your policies already have large elements of censorship to them already because not all discussions are civil and not every one wants to be forced to hold hands, sing Kumbaya, and skip happily through the meadows and fields of the internet in peace and harmony.
Also, the idea of hiding an unpopular comment really doesn't seem like an answer to me. Where's the penalty? It's not like users are visiting the site for the comments, this is 'I only subscribe to Playboy for the articles' sort of reasoning. I'm guessing the majority of people only comment on an image because there is a reward and they don't care how small it is. Remove the reward completely and have a penalty in place for heavily downvoted comments (temp ban on posting perhaps with complete removal of comment posting rights for repeat offenders with an appeal process). Or, just remove comments completely as they don't seem to have any real benefits for most users.
Ah semantics, okay. Remember I did say in
my opinion, not fact. Thank you.
Also keeping it civil means you are not trying to aggravate someone and keep this a conversation and not turn this into a confrontation.
Which by this post I can deduct, is something you are trying to do now. Nice try, but no...
@Hydrahead,
How about account preference settings where we could select "Hide Comments" in pics or videos
This is a good idea! Maybe a check box for each section Babes, Cars and Movies.
