Who intends buying Windows 8 on it's release this month ?
Nope.
I'll probably end up getting in in like a year or two when I get a new machine, but not gonna go out of my way to grab a copy. Win7 working fine as it is right now.
I have just built a new machine and will put Windows 8 on it...if it's crap then i will revert back to Windows 7.
Microsoft has a pattern to quality releases.
Windows 3.1 Shit.
Windows 95 Good.
Windows 98 Shit.
Windows 2000 Good.
Windows ME Shit.
Windows XP Good.
Windows Vista Shit.
Windows 7 Good.
Windows 8 ???
I've heard that it might be both shit and good.
Good if you're on a mobile/portable device, but shit if you're using a traditional desktop/laptop.
Apparently the people testing it thought it was too optimized for mobile computing/touchscreens, and not nearly intuitive enough for people with mice and things.

The last version of windows that I used with any regularity was XP, been on a mac ever since and it was the best decision I've made.
Been running it for a while now since it was RTM on MSDN. Actually moved my main PC to it completely.
Here's the thing. The Metro "Modern" UI sucks, but it isn't that big a deal because I only spend a few minutes in it a day. People whining about the Metro interface are mostly just that, whiners. For most people, it is just a Start Menu replacement. How much time do you spend in the Start Menu per day? Exactly. I only go into Metro at first login. Desktop is my first tile so hitting enter takes me right to desktop. From there I only see Metro when either I want to (there are a few things in there I use occasionally) or when I hit the Windows button and start typing to search for a program. There are some real complaints about search (it separates programs from files from settings with no way to combine) but they aren't even things most people know about.
Boot is fucking fast as hell. A test I did for another site showed 20 seconds for BIOS to finish detecting drives and go away. 17 seconds later I had lock screen. 19 Seconds after hitting enter on my password I had desktop Chrome open. Windows 7 barely got to the login screen before I already had a fully working desktop.
Overall performance is the same as Windows 7 for most things, but better for some. It seems to be much better with memory management and multi-threading.
The only drawbacks so far are 1) No DVD Playback in Windows Media Player without buying extra software (no biggie, use VLC) and 2) AMD doesn't support anything before the 5xxx series of Radeon cards with real drivers that enable all capabilities (I have a 3870 with no real need to upgrade).
For reference, my hardware:
Athlon II x3 450 (3 core, 3.2 Ghz)
4 GB Ram
Creative SB X-FI
Radeon HD 3870 PCI-x driving a 20 inch LCD monitor
Radeon HD 4250 onboard for connecting to my 32 inch TV
2x320 GB SATA drives
DVD-/+RW
99.9% of my time is on iPhone and iPad, with the 0.1% spent on a cheap laptop running windows 7, downloading movies/music and updating said iPhone/iPad.
Just out of interest, apart from better touchscreen capability, what other 'improvements ' are on 8?

So I got a chance to play with it a bit in a Microsoft store. On a tablet or a phone this is actually really a cool OS. the problem is that when you're trying to use a mouse it's counter intuitive. Plus, for the convenience of tablet and phone users, they moved around a lot of the menus and advanced controls, so it will be a bit like learning from scratch. personally, not interested.
