I got some money for xmas wohoo! For this i want to buy an external harddrive. Preferably UBS powered and minimum 250 GB. If it was light and mobile as well it would be perfect.

I have been drawling on the Lacie http://www.lacie.com/no/products/product.htm?pid=10721 but that is not USB powered.

Any suggestions will be received with great thanks.

I'm not sure what the price in USD that site you posted would be, but check these ones out.

I've seen these in use before, and they're pretty fucking sweet. They're really small, they're quiet, and they are USB powered, just like you said you wanted.

In all honesty, I would love to haave one of these. They are like $150-175ish for a 250GB.

Whatever you choose, make sure it's a western digital, and not a maxtor harddrive. I've had to replace a couple of maxtors, very unreliable.

I just bought a 250 GB Maxtor for $80.00 USD, with USB hookup...I couldn't say no to the price...I've heard mixed things about em....

I pick up a maxtor in a store. I don't buy stuff over the net and they didn't have anything else. Had to replace it within a year and the replacement is most likely going the same way... Still pretty usefull when I only got a labtop.

I agree with the Western Digital recommendation. I've got the 160 GB Passport model and it's fantastic! Circuit City has the 250 GB model on sale right now for $129.00 and I saw where Best Buy has a 320 GB model now for $199.00. I would definitely recommend Western Digital.

I had a western digital mybook that failed in a month and the replacement within 6 months. My maxtor seems to be running good but i would go with seagate.

Honestly, as someone that has worked with all different brands of hard drives over the years, not one is better than another.

I have COMMONLY had failures for all brands. If you are looking for something to last a few years and your biggest dilemma is price, I suggest getting an extended warranty if possible, but go for whatever is the best deal. I have had as many regular WD drives fail as Maxtors.

If you are willing to do so, you can get enterprise class Western Digital IDE drive at a good price, and just purchase an external USB kit for it. The word enterprise may sound like it is a lot more expensive, but it is not, and those drives do in fact have a lower failure rate the first couple of years.

I have an acomdata external drive and I'm happy with it... Mine is firewire not USB but I don't notice a huge difference. Mine is 320Gb and I bought it for roughly the same as this 500Gb one is selling for now (go figure)!

$150 for 500Gb

Actually, my dog got caught in the power cord and pulled it off.

If my dog killed a hard drive, I would be chasing him around the house trying to kill him...

It was an accident, the drive was five years old, and there wasn't much of any importance on it. Besides, it's hard to stayt angry at this face for long!!

But the main point is it was a Maxtor that lasted that long.

If you're looking at LaCie drives this one fits the bill

http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10731

I have a couple of LaCie drives, one is bus powered and one has a power supply. Both drives have been reliable. I also like Seagate, they are very quiet and have a 5 year warranty. I don't think Seagate has a bus powered drive over 160GB though.

Hope this helps.

i got an iomega one, 300GB model, i have it partitioned with half for my wifes Vista laptop and the other half partitioned for my macbook pro. Cost me $215 and i havent had any issues with it in the last 6 months ive had it.

I didnt look for brands when i got it, just the size and cost, and then got a free warranty upgrade with it..

so far so good.

I recently got a Lacie 500GB from Mac Mall for $117. The customer reviews there said it was a Seagate drive inside. The one I got is a Samsung. External power supply, btw. Works well so far.
