TrueCrypt, the program. anyone know how to describe it and how to use it in simple terms?

like, can i essentially encrypt say, one of my entire harddrives? requiring a password to open it?

HELP!

- link to software (well, it's site): http://www.truecrypt.org/

Truecrypt is awesome.

The two basic options are:

1. Encrypt your entire HDD meaning you must enter a password at boot in order to load Windows, Linux etc OR
2. Create an encrypted container, think of it like an breifcase to which you add files. To access the briefcase you can enter a password, keyfile or both - these options are presented to you when you open the breifcase with truecrypt.exe

There are many advanced options such as hidden encrypted partitions but if you have to ask what truecrypt is its unlikely you're doing anything on your computer that would warrant such secrecy

Yeah, basically what that dude said.

You can encrypt a whole drive, and have a password set at the boot, plus have containers, which is pretty badass. Or, like he said, just have containers, that you can open, once they're unlocked, it's just the same as if you were copying/playing from an external HD. It's good to read the FAQs and such, so you don't end up fucking yourself over, since if you haven't done it before, it's a little tricky. Any other problems just PM Kanzen, since he knows a bit about it.

Plus, he likes PMs.

rofl. mostly just pictures... i have 2 hdds and i was wondering if i could encrpyt one so i could put photos and stuff and lots of stuff ive just written that i NEVER want to get out, as right now im only using "hidden" and "do not show hidden files" in obscure file locations to hide stuff... i share all the computers i have with my roommate, but another friend or two might be moving in, and makes chances of privacy even less. so id like a harddrive to be MINE with no chance of someone else stumbling on. and i know myself ways to bypass the stupid "windows account" password, so thats not an option.

any chance you could add me to msn or something and tell me more?

yeah from what ive seen kanzen is pretty.. high tech / intense. (intimidating!) lol.

That's weak. I remember when my sisters ex boyfriend used to leave his computer here, I was like 14 and I ripped through that guys shit like nobodies business. If you want to date my sister, you best not be havin any horse pornz. That stuff is super easy to find..like you said.

I keep all my music, pictures and well, pornz on an encrypted external drive, it's super easy, but when encrypting, it formats the drive, so you have to copy it all off first, and then put it back once it has been encrypted. You don't have to do this if you encrypt your computer hard drive that has your OS on it, which is cool beans.

Edit: Yeah, he's not really though, he's a cool guy, especially for teh chicks. He actually has a pretty cool lounge down in his basement you should check out if you're ever up his way.

I think you were talking to that other dude, but if you wanted me to add you to MSN, I probably know enough about it to walk you through it. It's pretty easy.

my main drive has all my stuff atm, but i want to encrpypt one of the others then copy my stuff over to it, and have it ecrpyted, so the whole drive acts like a password locked "briefcase" for my stuff.

Yeah, that's pretty easy to do, and effective at keeping your personal stuff personalz.

I've never done all that. I just keep my shit on my computer and have it password protected. The only people who would have physical access to my computer know that 1) I always have my laptop with me, and 2) if by chance I didnt and caught them using it, I would kill them....not metaphorically either.

I do encrypt shit on flash drives and such though. It's a good method of keeping your shit to yourself. If you don't want to go through all that though, instead of just making the files hidden, you could make them system hidden. Hidden files can still be seen by turning on show hidden files and folders. System hidden files are fucking hidden. They can still be accessed, but the average computer savy user would have no idea how.

You guys are too nice helpin with this problem. You do realize she's tryin to hide all her nudies right? And you do know that WBW thrives off of girls not hiding their nudies well don't you? What do you want WBW to go out of business? If you want to help RD or some ugly chick hide their nudies I'm all for it but what you guys are doing here is just plain wrong, it's unforgivable. Traitors.

Jenn, the easiest way to guarantee your privacy is to have no privacy at all. If you just post all the pics you're trying to hide and get it over with you'll feel a lot better. No more secrets, lies, or trying to to hide things. It's liberating. Give it a shot.

I've got Truecrypt on my laptop and on a desktop. It works really well. Installed easily and no problems.

On my laptop, I have encrypted the whole drive so it needs a password to boot into Windows. Once it's booted it works just like normal. It means anyone who steals it (or who boots it up when I'm not looking) won't be able to get on my office network or read my email.

On my home desktop. I've an encrypted file area to keep one or two things private, leaving the rest to boot up unencrypted. That seems to work well.

Of course I haven't had the CIA try to break into it. Anyway, I guess if they wanted to read my stuff they wouldn't try to break the encryption. They'd just kidnap me and send me to Ruriteria so the Ruriterian Secret Service could hang me upside down naked and give me electric shocks on my sensitive bits until I reveal my password

This is hilarious. I was reading about this program on their site and read this as one of the features:

-------------------
Plausible Deniability
In case an adversary forces you to reveal your password, TrueCrypt provides and supports two kinds of plausible deniability:
-------------------

Adversaries who force you to reveal your passwords? The computer nerds used to be so peaceful. What's this world coming to?

What they are referring to is extortion or threat of imprisonment. Say you want your personal 'finances' not to be seen by airport security, but you are forced to divulge the password, you give them the fakeout password which reveals a bunch of junk files. They don't know that a secret partition is still hiding more.

So basically let me see if I got this. The whole plausible deniability thing would apply to illegal stuff you want to hide. Basically you'd wanna hide all your bomb making diagrams, donkey sex vids, illegal copies of photoshop and such on there so when your adversaries (the Feds) show up and they waterboard you to get the password you just give them a dummy password and they won't be able to find your illegal files?

Is this program really good enough to beat government agencies who are investigating you? Because those are the only adversaries who I could see forcing anyone to do shit. They don't have techy people (like yourself or better, Kanzen) employed for this exact kinda stuff?

It is how I hide all of my illegal, donkey sex bomb pictures.

It only really works against lighter attempts, it would probably baffle anyone outside of the N*A, and C*A.

Interesting. If I ever get into espionage I'll be sure to keep this in mind.

I do have a wife though and a bunch of files she'd be better off not seeing so maybe I still have a use for this thing. Wives I suppose can also be adversaries.

yeah I like my girls to come with pussies big enough to hide a pound of weed and my software big enough to protect me from my adversaries.

I really like the word "adversary". It's not used nearly enough anymore. It sure beats "enemy".
#4211645
Lvl 11
Lol Punly. Well I am NOT that techy myself, but even I know how to get past the little Windows Account passwords so if I can beat it, it doesn't count as security. and nsi crypt/code division can crack anything on the market so far, just that longer encryptions and rotating multiple encrpytions with different clear text and stuff makes it so even their super computers with thousand of processors (built just to brute force stuff like this) takes awhile. but for average joe, its about as secure as it can get.

J-Swiss, lmao. i told people in my very first post i wouldnt be posting nudes :P sorry.
