Alot of you guys are talking about lagers rather than real beer. If that's your preference, then great. Some of the best lagers are Belgian (who says Belgium is boring) and are well worth a try.
If you want real beer - the best ones are from SMALL English independant breweries - Fullers, Shepherd Neame and Hook Norton being the largest of these. There are plenty of very strong regional brews, including 'Saxon Berserker' from the south coast - something like 7.5% but tastes really good.
Some Dark Star beers are also really good - you need to visit some proper beer festivals, try a few and make up your own mind.
My preference is cider - there are some great scrumpy ciders from independant brewers, mainly from the west country, but some good ones from the Isle of Wight too.
The best place to ask would be CAMRA - Campaign For Real Ale - they have their website at: www.camra.co.uk
You'd probably be able to contact people who'd be happy to send you information as well as a few beers!
