Which distro are you using? I tried using SuSE, but I had all sorts of driver issues during my install. I haven't had any issues with Ubuntu. Never needed support for dual monitors, so I had no reason to try to install Xinerama.

I think that a lot of Linux users prefer Gnome. I hate KDE. It looks too much like Windows.

I agree. Aside from Gnome being retarded on window placement for multiple monitors (I started using them for school a couple years back and got hooked on being able to look up so much information and comparing it side by side and such so easily) There's still one QT app I can't live without and that's Amarok. I love it. And Gnome can sometimes have little flukes with autostarting QT apps. Little things annoy me, but yeah I'd much rather be using Gnome myself I hope they fix some of these problems soon, I check often to see, but so far no luck for me. I don't really play into the whole DE war though. People use what they use because it works out for them. That's why I still use KDE. I could care less if it looks like windows and what not as long as I can still do what I need to do in a timely manor and enjoy doing it in the process.

As far as distro, I've tried them all. Been using Slackware since mid '95, and throughout the years I've bounced around trying to find what one fit me best. I've stuck with, and always come back to Arch ever since it was released. I hate bloated distos, and I found Ubuntu to come with allll sorts of crap that slowed everything down, stuff I'd never use anyways. I just found most others, not singling ubuntu out, far to laggy and unresponsive. Arch is blazing. I'd say it's faster than my Gentoo box ever was. I too used Suse for a while, but the way things work on that distro, and YAST just pissed me off. It got super slow after months of use for me. Nvidia drivers were a mess in it. Gah.

I have no problems with people using Ubuntu. It's great, and it's attracted a lot of new converts. It's just too...."I'll do everything for you" for me. I've always liked starting with a fresh install at the command line and adding only what I need in. I've also never been particularly found of APT and all of the repo adding/hunting you ahve to do for codecs and other wanted stuff. I know they have tools out there, but I still like using the command line over gui's. Those gui's don't teach ya much, and had I not forced myself back in the day to edit things by hand and learn, I'd still know nothin.

I do, however, use Debian on my server. Arch is bleeding edge, one of the things I love about it. And while I've never had any trouble with it, I still tend to like a more stable set of apps for a pure server environment. On the desktop I could care less if something breaks. It'll give me something to do for 10 minutes But, like I said, no offense on using Ubuntu. It makes me happy to see some Linux users up on here, no matter what distro is right for them. Just turns out Ubuntu wasn't right for me
