How the hell do you afford to get drunk? One of my best friends just got back from a month long vacation there and he told me it'd cost me thousands to get drunk. He said the grocery store he went into sold cases of beer for like $60. I drink a case a night so I could only afford to get drunk once every other month if that's the case. He also went to some bars and said they charge $8 for a 12oz beer..WTF. $3 is expensive here for a beer at a bar. He said he ordered two beers and two shots of jager and it was $55. That'd only be like $15 here. Damn you Aussies and your expensive alcohol. So tell me, is it that expensive everywhere over there?

oh, don't worry. a lot of people get drunk down here. they may not have any money left but getting drunk down here is a national past time.

i don't drink, really, or gamble or even like cricket, rugby, AFL, or league. perhaps i should hand over my citizenship.

if you compare prices, it does get expensive down here. that's why i'd rather purchase select items from the US when i can.

I think your friend is leading you astray. A case (slab) of domestic beer costs between $30 and $37 (around $US27-$US35). Imported beer is about $45-$50 a slab. Abd two beer and two shots of jager would cost around $15

Perhaps he was so drunk he didn't know what he was paying. Or he's an habitual liar! Either way, alcohol costs about the same in Australia as it does everywhere else.

When i went a few years back it was $2 for a Pot and $3 for a Schooner. That's roughly half a pint and 2/3 a pint? It seemed pretty level with the UK at the time.

Unless the exchange rate is terrible at the minute i doubt it's overly expensive.

I guess it really depends on what beer you're buying. Here in the US, I've bought beer for $US37, and I've bought beer for $9.99. How good is the you're talking about?

I think Australia would be my 2nd country of choice to live in. A vast majority seem to enjoy Americans and get annoyed by Canadians just as much as the next. Just give me a high paying job to continue my booze habit and i'd be set.

damn that's expensive. Even disregarding the initial numbers and going with the number markpyoung used that's still rape! Holy shit. $30+ for a case of beer? You don't even pay that here for the expensive imports like Heineken and Corona. What is goin on in Oz? Does your government hate alcohol and tax the hell out of it like they do here in the US with cigarettes?

the stereotypes is that all Victorians drink melbourne bitter, sydneysiders drink carlton draught/cold and queenslanders drink XXXX....but ive rarely known that to be true..
Im in Canberra and we pretty much drink everything, except melbourne bitter....its not as common here, although Victoria Bitter is, which is a piece of shit IMO

theres no REAL beer that aussies drink, we pretty much drink it all ......
