Anyone around here experienced in PHP coding that can help me out with some basics?
I'm kind of "mentor shopping" right now. No, you don't do it for me. You teach me how to do it. I want to do all the work myself.
Anyone interested or have any resources that might help get me started? Forums, sites, tutorials on the web, etc?
The project I am working on is a multiplayer grid-based game.
http://www.php.net/manual/en/ for reference
Most I have learned with trail and error, and good help from a some friends of mine.
That manual looks good, thank you. I'll definitely be wanting someone I can ask questions of though as well. Any ideas where such a community or person might be found?
Well I am PHP programmer. I could give some pointers from time to time.
Right... Because I don't impose enough...
You're aces, Diz, but I already steal your bandwidth, server resources, borrow your crew from time to time (God bless 'em), shit-post your forum when I'm bored, and a bunch of other shit.
I would hate to impose any further than I already do, and I am going to have a ton of questions. I have never done anything like this before. I really don't feel right imposing beyond what I already have over the years.
Thank you though, you're awesome - beyond awesome!
Apologies for the delay in my responses. I had a ... Wait for it... Wait for it... Complete PC crash. It bricked. At least I wasn't in the middle of the project already.
I now have a shiny new PC and I'll be starting this project soon. I sincerely appreciate the offers of help from you all, and will try to get as far as I can before I cry out for mercy.
You guys rock! Your support gives me confidence and energy which might well mean I do a better job of the coding on my own. It helps knowing that if I hit a rough spot I have people I can ask for help. Thanks you guys!
Okay, so I recently went into a chat room for programmers... Populated by people from Somethingawful. They damn near burned me at the stake for even proposing building a browser game in php. Many suggested I do it in python instead. The issue is that people I know and trust have told me I want to do this in php.
What do you guys all think?

When I first started with PHP, I used the information at w3schools.com along with a couple of O'Reilly books.
I find that a well-written reference book goes a long way when learning a new programming language. Sure the information is available on the internet, but with a book, I can get most of that information grouped in one place and sorted by relative importance.
The following books by O'Reilly came in particularly handy:
Learning PHP & MySQL ISBN:9780596514013
Programming PHP ISBN:9780596006815
Do you think php is better for a browser based game than python, Bisbandon?
PS: Thanks for the book titles! I had another friend who just tonight told me to get those exact same books. I take that coincidence to mean they're probably pretty good for what I am doing. I appreciate the hint.
PHP is better for everything. Let me know if you need help with PHP based CMS systems. That is my thing.
Off to spend the day in Drupal.
I ordered the books. Hopefully the site I want to use is purged soon. I'll have a bunch of questions, but I know I have one already.
In order to get the PHP to work I'm essentially building it inside of html pages, right? So when I do this I'm going to have a bunch of different files (one for each of the screens I want a user to see). When I organize this on my web site, I presume that for ease of organization a billion different folders is acceptable and preferred?
