Buy ATI. Both cards have Shader Model 3.0, which was big lack in ati's old cards, but x1600 has the new technology.

The 7300 is in the same generation as the x1600, therefore they both have the "new technology". Both support SM3.0, maybe a reasonable amount of AA/AF, but I don't know if they do HDR or not. Are you going to do any heavy gaming on the laptop? If so, go with the 7800GTX GO if possible.

Check out http://www.rojakpot.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=98 that link to get a full on comparison of something like 60 mobile GPU's.

7800GTX in a laptop? Jesus christ, that thing runs so high temperatures, that every laptop is running like a sauna after that. Just take the ATI chip, and you'll be fine.

Heavy gaming and laptop do not belong in the same sentence unless you add $$$$$$.

Hrm. that's kind of like how "heavy petting" and "hot daddy's girl" do not belong in the same sentence unless you add $$$$$$.

I have no ide what Shader Models is, probably wont be doing any heavy gaming.
I'm going to install Avid Xpress Pro onto it, and do basic photoshop and After FX Editing.

I just ahve no idea what to look for, but the computers i have been looking at (an Asus A6J and an Asus A6QJC) had these two different graphic cards.

Looks like i'll be going for the ATI...

thanks guys

For what you are looking to do, CPU, RAM, and HD are the keys. Video won't matter much at all. All else being equal, look at battery like to make your decision.

That's the point here. Try to stick with something that has a long lasting battery and a good display (brightness, viewing angle, etc.). Try to get as much RAM as you can for your money; more RAM means more fun at work. HD should be ok nowadays (you hardly get less than 60GB).
Obviously, the battery lasts longer if your CPU and (especially) graphics chip are adapted to the kind of device you buy, i.e. don't try to get graphics hardware that allows to run your latest 3D shooter with all graphics options in 1600x1280 resolution...

I got this baby in my computer:

it runs nice and cool... but, of course, isn't for a laptop.
