JUJU, JACK, if you guys are around, i know you are the photoshop gods around here....

Problem is as follows, i've got blending, filtering, text, and cropping down pretty good... Its getting the pic back to avatar format (resizing) thats giving me crap. I know i have to stay within 100 by 100 pixels or 10240 whichever is smaller. (no i'm not a sponsor)

I found the resize option under...images...resize...however if i resize to under 10 kb i'm left with an extremely small picture. or lousy quality.

Jack who made my current avy; managed to stay within 10kb and maintain size and quality. so in short how do i do that??

Any advice would be greatly appreaciated

Have you already tried the "Save for web" function? It gives you pretty small filesize.

File -> Save for web

You can adjust the compression by there, it is a saviour. Try progressive and other snippets too.

once you resize it you want to save as a web file, in that window you can lessen the colors or save as a jpeg, watch the numbers in the lower left corner, you need to be under 10.k, you can take a great photo and change it to maybe 64/120 something colors, it will lower the size without f'ning with the photo

anotherthing to do, is still use the save to web button, and change it from gif to jpeg in the sliders area off to the upperright, aslong as the photo looks good and the 10K rule is followed you should still have nice looking avy

the next step, but a sponsership

hellcat, make sure you add the text after you shrink the image size, a good rule of thumb is its always shunk to 100 by whatever, the 100 being the important #, the other number is the length only

there is one more thing i can think that you may appreciate knowing

gif format should be used for indexed colours. that means not detailed gradients, no fotography, aquarelle kind fo colours

jpg format should be for colours dont mix and blend together a lot

using that criteria is also a good thing when shrinking
you still might get under the size using one or another but the correct one will give you much more quality

BAD GIF

ARGUABLE GIF (you can see how the gradient is done and that the idea apparently)

GOOD GIF

GOOD JPG

BAD JPG

and most all typographys work better as a gif

and then... we reach PNG format

but i dont know if that is suppoerted

cheers

pd. worst gif ever!
