Im looking to purchase a new handgun in the near future. Im wanting something like a 40SW or 45ACP I had a 9mm but would like something with a little more kick ass! I have my eye on a Desert Eagle 40SW (Baby Eagle) I like Rugers and Berettas as well. Any suggestions of a good reliable handgun around those calibers? Im trying to stay in the range of $400.00 to $650.00 Thanx for any suggestions

I carry a colt 1911 model 80 it is the compact officers version .45 acp I also have a air light from smith & wesson stay away from the desert eagle it is for show nothing else. A Marine Sgt. once said never go to a gun fight with anything that doesn't start with a 4, example .45 .40 .454 you get it. .45 acp is a slow round but if you do some research you can get a faster round for it I carry Cor Bon ammo But I am getting into loading my own and that is much more cost effective if you want to shoot alot. If you want any other info pm me.

Its a tough question because it depends on whether you plan on being able to carry it (if your state allows it). If it is just for home protection, then there are several options, including a 1911 like JakeEman said. But if you want to carry, then I think your best options in that price range are either a Glock or a Springfield XD. I have a Glock model 21 (.45 ACP) and its a great gun, very accurate and parts are available anywhere. The problem (or benefit) with the Glock is that it does not have many safety features. The Springfield XD has a few safety features, including a grip one, so its probably a "safer" gun. Either gun is well within your price range.

Another good point is the price of ammo. .45 is really expensive, I think the last box of ammo I got was about $35? The .40 is heavy round but a bit cheaper. 9mm would be the cheapest, I think the last box I got was about $25. If you want the gun for self-defense, then I think .40 or .45 is the way to go because (1) its a bigger round which means more stopping power, and (2) you have less likelihood of the projectile going through the target and causing collateral damage. For example, if you live in an apartment, its not unlikely that if you were to fire the weapon, it would go through the drywall and into your neighbor's house. Lastly, most police officers carry a .40 or .45, which I'm sure counts for something. If you don't "plan" on using it for self-defense, then I dont see any reason not to go with the 9mm.

Finally, stay away from the Taurus. They are cheap, but they suck big time. For a few more bucks, you can get a Glock which, although some people hate it because its "plastic", its one of the most accurate gun you can buy out of the box.

And just so I don't look like I only like polymer guns, my favorite gun is a Kimber 1911 Gold Match II, which will run you about $1300 with no frills.

Another bit of info missing is what state do you reside in? California has the most restrictive laws in the US with regards to what can and can not be sold in the state.

Getting back to your question though, a 45ACP with the budget you have stated would be hard to come by IMHO. Most 1911's here in CA are running from the 800's to 1200's. That of course is for a quality 1911 here in CA. YMMV.

My suggestion would be to look at some of the online sites that allow users to buy and sell on them. I use one daily and there are two others that I know of that do quite well. Hit me offline and I will give you the info.

All that being said, my choices would be Sig, Glock, Kimber or a trusty Colt.

haha... revolvers "better" than semi-autos? heeeere we go...
do you shoot much?
why have virtually all law enforcement, military, and secret service gone to semi-auto carry???

I have over half a million rounds through my aluminum framed Colt 1911 lightweight commander 45 semi-auto - my first firearm (I was told not to get as the frame would crack... hasn't done it yet, and I reload and shoot many high power rounds through it.)

jams can happen with any gun, including the several revolvers I have...
I conceal carry a Ruger SP101 due to point n shoot simplicity and compact size firepower - not because it doesn't jam (it has), if I am concerned about needing more rounds - I carry a semi-auto .40 or bigger.

NOTE: average fire fight is 2-3 rounds at less than 4-5 feet.
Carry what you can comfortably carry and accurately shoot!
Whatever you decide on - get trained and shoot often to be proficient.

I picked up an S&W Military and Police .45ACP. It's been a great gun. A friend of mine shoots a Springfield .45ACP and it also seems to cycle any ammo without too much trouble.

Kimber Custom II TLE/RL, by far Kimber's quality in 1911's is more reliable then most.
Sig Sauer P229 .357 is also a great weapon for the price, a SIG certified used (factory refurbished) will save you some you some good $$$. Got mine for 450ish.

If your looking to save some money go with the 40sw but not much more kick than a 9mm.
45 ACP rounds are not cheap!

Owner of:
3 Kimbers (TLE/RL Custom II, TLE/RL Compact, Desert Warrior), 2 Sigs (P229 .357, P220).
Military Service weapons- HK Mk23, Colt M4-Carbine, Hk MP5SD, and a few more...
