Just a Few to throw a Spanner into the works
, These guys may not Be technical Wizards but they have what every good bass player should really have, and thats Good Rythm and they are solid as fuck.
After all Bass Is primarly a rythm instrument.
Philip Lynott from Thin Lizzy
Simon Gallup from The Cure.
Still its hard to go past the briliance of Claypool

Les Claypool - Primus, Sausage, Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, etc.
Ryan Martinie - Mudvayne (I don't care if he's newer, he's better than most mentioned.)
Billy Sheehan - Talas, DLR, Vai solo, Mr. Big and a bunch of others.
Cliff Burton - Metallica (Might not be the most technical but made a huge impact in metal)
Stu Hamm - A bunch of stuff, but I mainly know him from Joe Satriani.
Flea - Chili Peppers, Fear, The Mars Volta on De-Loused in the Comatorium.
As far as like Stanley Clarke and a couple of others, he's not really a rock musician. Right??

Big up to John Deacon!!!
@rainbowdemon (and to all other Queen fans): Did you know that Freddie forced him to change his name to "Deacon John" at the beginning ?? he thought John Deaco n was too boring..

Cliff, Flee, Paul McCartney, Chancellor just to name a few. its really hard to say who is THE greatest because there are so many styles and methods of playing bass. it's kinda like trying to name the greatest guitarist ever. i don't think its really possible.
