I've never heard it called going commando but military units that spend alot of time on combat patrols and training for combat patrols, say more then a couple of weeks at a time, might not wear underwear because your underwear/t-shirt/socks are usually going to be and stay wet from either water or sweat. Unless you have underwear made from some exotic material, regualr underwear will shrink when moisture and heat combine. This creates a host of problems.
1. When on the move, your crotch will chaff. infections and rashes can form plus discomfort.
2. Its easier to shake out debris and insects from inside your trousers when not having underwear on.
3. Especially for scout/snipers, going to the bathroom in your pants is easier to clean out in the feild if their are no underwear.
