Freespace 2 SCP (Source Code Project)
Found a free version of an absolute classic, this one is a sci-fi combat sim called Freespace 2. Even though it's relatively old (1999), you wouldn't know it, especially since it's been upgraded (read on). For the uninitiated, Freespace 2 is perhaps the best game of its genre, period. Volition and Interplay were the developer and publishing companies, respectively, that went out of business some time ago but were kind enough to release the source code for the game. While the retail game itself is next to impossible to find (routinely goes for $100 on eBay and Amazon), a community of modders and programmers took the source code and made it available to the public. In addition to the retail game, however, they upgraded the graphics engine and made the game even better than the original to take advantage of today's graphic capabilities. If you have a force feedback joystick, you owe it to yourself to download and play this game, which I guarantee will knock your socks off. This game is best played with a joystick, by the way.
NOTE: The link gets you ONLY the installer file which is about 21 MB in size. The actual download for the game from this file can exceed 3 GB, I believe. It's best to let it run overnight, and then you'll have to re-run a few files to update them.
READ the instructions and notes!

Also go to http://www.hard-light.net for additional info, mods, missions, campaigns, etc.

If that review doesn't convince you the greatness of this game, I don't know what will.
Enjoy! I know I did!
