I just did a reinstall of windows XP pro and I carelessly deleted the partition on my hard drive that I was using to backup my files. Is there a way for me to recover that data or is it a lost cause?

Wrong. For all practical purposes, nothing really ever gets erased from a hard drive, just overwritten. When you delete something, the drive just sets that physical space as OK to write over, but the data is still there. There are quite a bit of tools out there that will scan the entire surface of the drive looking for files or file fragments, and usually work very well as long as minimal amounts of data have been written to the drive since the deletion.
