Converting files to dvd format

Hi all i know your bored of this question but your my only hope, having just bought a dvd burner i cant convert my downloaded video files to a compatable format for my dvd player can anyone suggest a site or programme to use ?

I use TMPGEnc Plus (available at http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm) to convert files to DVD format, and then DVDLab Pro to create the menus, etc.

Works like a charm.
