I recently got turned onto the whole torrent thing. I started out with some of the classics,(fast times star wars ect), then heard that the recording industry was getting aggressive on music downloads. Someone in my neighbood got nailed. He had high speed access that his kids and the nieghbor kids where taking advantage of. The kids downloaded 12,000+ songs, alot of them crap (barney theme song). He was sent a letter offering a settelment of around $5000.00 and disregarded it. In the end he got prosicuited and ordered to pay $10,000 with some public service work. His public service is interviews on the local radio staions, he advised to take such threat more serious than he did.

The stuff I downloaded where just a few movies until my friend who got me started suguested the leagal possibilities, he recommended just going with TV shows. Today he told me even though he had never downloaded anything but TV he got a letter from his ISP telling him he was in violation of copyright laws.
And would loose service if it where to continue.

I am concerned that George Lucas and his army of Ewoks are going to seek revenge.

Anyone have experience in the torrent leagalities?

They send those things out to nearly everyone. I've downloaded a few movies lately, but only because the VHS copies I paid for and bought have fucking encryption that won't let me make even one DVD for myself from them. Some of those movies I paid $30 for. It's a load of shit. When I see George Lucas sitting on a median somewhere with a cardboard sign, I'll feel badly for him.
Transformers has grossed $155,405,412.00 through last week. 99% of the world will never make that much in their entire lifetime, let alone in two weeks.
These cases are simply the rich getting richer and doing their level best to see to it that they keep getting richer all the time. Luckily, the courts are starting to side with the accused more and more.

Personally, I've bought about $45,000 in music and at least that much in movies. They'll have a hard time proving I didn't download something I've already paid for, albeit in another format.

I'm on a Mac and I was accused of 'sharing Norton Antivirus 2006 by Symantec. They sent me an e-mail saying they had 'probed my PC and found it installed'. When I informed them that I had an iMac, and sent a screen shot of my system info, they backed down. Wouldn't admit to trying to intimidate me with lies, but they got off my case.

That is why you should only torrent download when you are stealing wireless access from the guy across the street.

My friend who thinks he was good with TV shows wonders how do you tell it is copyrighted material?

You've made the rookie torrent mistakes. First you need PeerGuardian. Very fucking helpful, it blocks known IPs of MediaSentry and other groups looking to bust you..basically guards your privacy. Second join a private tracker, or use only overseas based trackers. Finally go to a mom & pop broadband provider. Most cities have smaller regional competitors that are less likely to pull the same shit Comcast and the other big dogs do. I've been downloading "legal" material like tv shows for almost 10 years now, without a single legal problem.

Looks like it yeah. Although we have powers, we are moderators but nothing can stop the n00b posting outside the correct place. That makes us powerless.
