Good work JAWZ and GD....
Figured you both deserved some appreciation.
Hate when someone take a new avy but does not say thank you...

Thanks
I agree
Also, good work GD, I really like the font/effects you used. I need to get some pointers from you

Thanks KD! (btw I agree
)
Thanks JAWZ! You're too kind.
If I can be any help perhaps my little tutorial illustrations might offer some help?
Step 1: I usually give the font color a stroke basically border around the letters. The key to having things stand out a bit is matching color hex. Finding a color that closely matches the font, in this case a darker yellow color for the border. I also think not all fonts need a stroke, but most of the times it helps to make font stand out a bit more, it can be very subtle which can make a big difference.

Step 2: You can see that I used drop shadow, and with some settings kinda makes the text stand out a bit more.

Step 3: Use gradient overlay and in normal slightly lower the opacity. Cool effect imo.

Step 4: Using gradient tool on your tools menu on the left, you can give that shimmer/glow to text making it stand out. Very cool effect. Drag mouse over text slightly to create a gradient ball, then select blending mode to "screen" which gives the ball more glow. You can play around to achieve a look you might find better than screen. Add a little star to the text with your glitter/star brush...and give it also a blending mode to achieve the glow desire and correct blending to the text etc

JAWZ not sure if this can be of some help. Let me know what you think.

AWESOME!!!! I'm gonna try this
Just one question though, how do you add the text to the avatar?
I know there are a few ways to do it but I usually go with the quick and easy route by clicking the "T" button and then clicking on the avatar (after resizing/cropping it), type out the text, resize it, then add the effects.
It looks as though you have the text in a separate window using a larger size so that you can "fine tune" the effects of it, then re-size and apply it to the avatar.
Also you should post that in the Webdesign graphics - Rules/make your own avatar & Tutorials
=Edit=
Decided to try it before going to bed and this is how it turned out using the text in a separate window option......
and this is the avatar I applied everything to (it was the only picture I could find quickly)......
I think it turned out pretty well, I may start doing my avys this way from now on.

Not bad JAWZ!! That looks pretty wicked! (beer)
I do it the same way as you too, put the text on the avy then work it from there. I should have done the tutorial using a avy sample it didn't cross my mind.

Thanks
I always have trouble getting the text to look "crisp" or "clean" especially using small fonts, thats the reason I thought you might do it another way.

Right I understand. I used to have that problem but found out a few things:
1) The style of the font. Some fonts by nature are messy looking or distorted. Or too smooth. I try to stick with thicker fonts instead of thin or script.
2) I use "sharp" instead of "smooth" in photoshop. Not much of a big difference but it helps.
3) Setting the width of the font ("windows" then "character" for the menu) might help. Example below:

4) Stroke helps greatly to make small fonts stand out because it gives them an outline. The outline should be a darker color of the font color.
