Another thing that might help is click start then run. Type msconfig in the box. Click ok. Choose selective start up. Click startup. Go through the list and uncheck things that you don't need running all the time. Click ok, and restart.

If you've got a bunch of uneeded start up items, this will help.

stop.... dont, i used to do that too, but after some digging on the web, about some strange files that kept popping up on my system drive, i learned that msconfig is a power tool to find boot up errors only.
Enable ALL startup programs disabled in msconfig, and get this one to remove 'em with http://startupmanager.org (its free)

Best way would be to avoid the possibility of getting it to begin with. Get a Mac </Kanzen>

I have a few things that I use. I use Spybot on a regular basis, and I also have spysweeper, which I have set to run once a week. That right there keeps me pretty safe as far as shit getting installed that shouldn't.

When I do work on computers cleaning them up and whatnot, I usually use Spybot to run the initial scan and clear up as much shit as I can, then I use hijackthis to pick up on any bits and pieces that were left over. Those usually take a manual cleaning to get them out. After that, I run McAfee Enterprise which picks up just about all the shit that's not supposed to be in there. That makes sure that what I manually deleted is gone. It's kinda a long and sometimes redundant process, but I tend to be thorough with computer shit. Of all the combinations of programs I have used before, this one seems to usually work best.

If you wanna give this method a shot, just lemme know; I have copies of all the installs I can send you with all the seria...seriously needed stuff.

Free is ok. A2 free is good but paid version is awesome!
System Mechanic is superb for keeping machine in top form. Not free... but with "right" coupons can be had for under $30 bucks.
Remember to defrag memory and HD.

Try a Linux Distro and you won't have these problems.
