Go into your bios and see what the cpu's fsb is set at and change it if it's set too low. I can't really help you out much more without knowing whether your Pentium is a Prescott or Northwood core and what socket it is *if it's a Prescott*.

Vixenk's got you. Make sure you don't overclock it too much though (if you do), or you'll just have to sniff the remains of your computer.

Actually, his voltage would need to be significantly raised before he fried his cpu overclocking. Raising his fsb too high would be enough to cause issues, but not fry his cpu.

And um, Bang- DON'T raise your voltage, lol.

Lol, I know he would have to actually try to fry his cpu to do it. Btw, how did his fsb get so low. He installed new ram and all the sudden it's way underclocked?

Opera's my porn browser. Firefox is clean and for work As far as memory goes, if you have a gig or more, it doesn't really matter. Right now on my computer Firefox is using ~64MB and Opera ~52MB (not much difference). It's should only be a problem with 128/256MB of ram.

I do have a gig. But FF was using 170+MB. Opera usually uses around 30 MB.

odd ram # 64 megs short of 512...maybe something is messing with the bus speed...a 1066 bus dropped to 400 would be about right with a 2.5 multiplier...you can usually overclock 10%

if this is the same computor you had the problem with the ram...sounds like one module is bad or a diffrent bus speed...wrong bus speed in the 0 bank will set the speed for the rest of the ram...poss the system...pull out all the ram except for the original with it in the 0 [some have it 1] slot see if it works fine...if it does get a matched set from crucial or kingston

Some of the P4 have something similar to cool'n'quiet from AMD. That sets the multiplier to a lower setting during non-peak usage. This is helpful on laptops but no very helpful on desktops. It has been known to get stuck at the lower setting until you reboot. Check with Intel on your CPU model to see if it is capable of it and how to disable it. For most AMD, you have to manually install the driver so I just didn't install it to avoid issues.

That is obviously a laptop computer that drops the CPU clock frequency when the CPU load is low. That also explains the weird amount of RAM. It is, in fact, 512MB with 64MB shared video RAM.

And I can't believe there has been 4 pages of bullshit, yet no one has figured that out.

Actually it was pretty much figured out in the previous post. I somehow didn't see it.
