For years I heard that designers HATED the rear view mirrors.
The were big and bulky and ugly.
So why do they still use them?
Video cameras are small, have great detail and can zoom
as well as pan, and tilt.
So why do we still have mirrors?
mirrors, but only because constant moving images, ie. cameras, are and would be a constant distraction to drivers.
Mirrors, for a couple of reasons.
1) Sometimes technology is not the best thing. You forget that mirrors still allow for a certain amount of depth perception that cameras would not be able to do. Cameras can pan and tilt, but not as easily as I can pan and tilt my head to change the angle and my view. I would need to manipulate a stick or other device that would take my attention away from driving.
2) Expense. Some automakers offer cameras as an option, but not standard. Cars already cost a shit ton more than they are really worth, especially at the bottom end. People who need cars the most are the people who would wind up not able to purchase them.
3) Cameras are just one more thing to screw up on a car. And electronics on cars are bad to screw up.
Have you noticed the enormous size of some rears?
I like rear view mirrors...I think they're badass.
But Cameras are all gismo and neatsies.

I have mirrors on my mirrors.
I just bought my wife a new vehicle on which the side mirror housing actually has two mirrors. One of those mirrors has an additional mirror inside the mirror. The mirror housing also has turn signals, running lights, and all sorts of other crap. I hate to think what it would cost if she knocked one of them off on something. In addition to all of this.... it also has cameras. What could go wrong???
while you're at it, why not get one of those fancy cars that parallel park themselves.......let's take the driving out of driving and have everything be all futuristic and automated.......what could possibly go wrong
