I have two cars with check engine lights on. I had one checked out by Pep Boys, it is a 2001 Camry with 65K miles on it. The code is P0420, they said we need a new catalytic converter and a new pipe that is giving the car an exhaust leak. They said it will cost $1,500 with labor. Does this seem normal for a car with that low mileage to need that expensive of a repair? Or is Pep boys trying to rip me off and it is something simpler, that they are trying to make look like a bigger issue? They said if we dont fix it ASAP that we could blow a piston or a gasket and the engine would be ruined. Is this true?
Also the other car has 219K miles on it and a check engine light with code P0401 and P0301, I changed the spark plug in clynder 1 but I dont know how expensive it will be to fix the other error, especially since the car has a lot of miles, but I also am not ready to junk it either. Thoughts?
