The question:
Should i get it fixed or...buy a new car?

Opinions anyone?

I'd hit up Carmax...They have pretty decent prices on used cars/trucks.
Anytime something like a trans or a engine went up unless it was in a much older vehicle I'd get s new/used car.Usually it costs quite a bit and as you said just your luck the engine would blow whcih would be another $3k minimum prolly. You can get pretty good cars from CARMAX for $5k and up.And if they don't have what you want, they'll track one down for ya.

Also on trade in's...they do some 105 point inspection and they will tell you what is wrong.A buddy actually had them check his car cause he claimed he was gonna trade it in.they told him what was wrong and he rolled out lol.Prolly don't do that now.

just remember..

IF you trade the car as-is you loose 1500,- on the trade (mainly due to the not running , plus a car dealer is not going to inspect it the tranny and open it first before giving you a value , they just take a X ammount off the trade for the repair )

say the tranny only costs $ 200,- to fix ... you sir just dropped $ 1300,- now this is not just where it ends...because your trade in was lower you will end up paying more in interest on your loan. so if you would fork the $200 out fix it and get full trade (prolly more then $2500 , but it kinda depends on what you buy back) you would have a lower loan ammount , so in the end less interest...so it's a win-win situation if the repair is alot less thehn teh difference in trade between running / not running.

i did the same thing a few years ago , except i bought my neighboors car , it had blown the engine... payed $500 for the car... spend 10 hours rebuilding the top part of the engine ( one of the cam oil canals got stopped up and locked the cam up breaking the timing belt with it) total cost for repairs $ 110,-

next day traded it in against a $12,000 car and got $2400,- for it... if i would have traded it as i bought it , i prolly wouldn't have gotten more then $500,- for it.
