The Magnificent Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car stunned enthusiasts at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show, now its fate hangs in the balance. Will it make it to production and will it steal Porsche’s 911 buyers?
This mid-engined, four wheel drive Super Car reflects Audi’s relentless passion to penetrate every sector of the car market. It is somewhat of a dramatic leap forward, yet Audi’s recent winning titles in the 24-hour Le Mans championship re-enforce its commitment to develop outstanding race machinery.
Taking ques from the triumphant R8 Le Mans Race car is sure to clinch the sale for more than a few enthusiasts. The concept car is also based on the same platform as the Audi owned Lamborghini Gallardo. Various tweaking has been carried out by designers and what we are likely to get delivered to show rooms in late 2006 is a very uniquely styled motor.
The low down sweeping lines of symmetry, the chunky wheels, huge air intakes, twin exhausts and sharp intense headlights give it head turning appeal. Although sleek, it demands 70mm more road length than the Gallardo and certainly won’t hang around at traffic lights.
The estimated power output of its V8 engine is 414bhp at 7800 rpm. The 0-60 time also reflects that of a super car, a sprightly 4.5 seconds to be precise and a top speed of around 177mph. Its V8 engine also promises a staggering power to weight ratio of 271bhp per ton. In essence it isn’t going to be all show and no go, if it makes it to production this beautifully sculpted motor will be toying with the very best machines on the roads.
Its rivals will be the likes of the Porsche 911 and the Aston Martin V8 Vantage which the Le Mans Quattro concept is hoping to under cut with a price tag of around £57,000. Audi are also planning to up their stakes by offering a V10 engine which will produce around 500bhp. What transmission will deliver this power is not yet known, although the concept car exhibited paddle-shifts at its Motor Show launch.
All that is left to ponder upon is the kind of production figures Audi can expect and if the market is steeped with demand will it out sell the Porsche 911’s? Well, it seems Porsche already has a game plan which comes in the form of its new Cayman.
So the war is on; can Audi’s bold Super Car steal the show? Will it poach enough Porsche buyers or are you staying loyal?
