As for a deck, in my opinion there are so many head units out there that it seems more like personable preference and features than anything else. If you're really into sound systems make sure you get a HU that gives you good control of sound production. Such as fine tuning of the low, mid, and hi's. Frequency response, etc. And also separate sub control. I've gone through my share of HU's and have to say that a good deck really does affect the way even a stock speaker setup sounds.
Also, there's so many nifty features to keep you entertained too if you like that sort of thing. Like, animations/short clips, uploading your own pictures, color changing displays, motorized faces, etc.
i'd say for the all around audio enthusiast just get one from a good reputable company, with decent controls, and it'll suffice.
