Removing Rust

Never figured I'd be posting in the car forum, but maybe someone here can help me out with my car problems. I have a 1994 Honda Accord Lx with a slowly growing rust spot above the right rear wheel. I know that rust can sometimes be worse underneath then the exterior so I really would like to have it fixed.

Is it possible to do this myself, keeping in mind I'm not very car knowledgable? If so, any tips?

If I took it to some repair shop, any estimates on how much something like that would run? I know it varies depending on how bad it is and such so I can always post a picture later if that would help.
Thanks

I don't really care about the appearance of the car so long as it runs. Hell, I got it used from family and the rust was there at the time (over a year ago). What I'm interested in is stopping the rust and hopefully eliminating it all together. Though realistically, I know that I would not be able to eliminate it all without professional assistance.

Don't care what it looks like?? sand it down to the metal... and spray with rustoleum (rust stopping paint) you choose the color.. naval jelly also works well to remove rust... but thats better for like the rust you get on bicycles.

Thanks, I'll look into getting the materials and such. Yeah, appearance doesn't really matter to me at the moment as my funds are low and I'm lucky to have a car at all. Got the car for practically nothing and without it I'd be walking everywhere. I'm loving it so long as it runs and passes inspection.

man, if you don't have the cash to fix that up i could suggest something a bit easier.
use Coca-Cola...i mean the drink....it removes rust (honestly)....just try it on a small portion of rust
don't soak it in cola, just use something like a used toothbrush to apply it there...
it would really help if you would sand it down to the metal like bachiotomy said...
after that you could buy a spray-paint the color of your car (or similar) and after cleaning the area (with some special cloth or just plain degreasing detergent) wait for it to dry and apply.
hope your car will get better....mine is even older and i don't have the money to fix it....thank god i don't have rust....just some chipped paint and some problems with the front quarter-panels....they're a bit dented...

The best way to remove rust from a car body is by using something like KURUST, what it does is convert the iron oxide into zinc oxide therefore stopping the rust, you just paint it on and wait for the rust to disappear then you lightly sand the area flat, use an anti rust zinc based primer and then paint over the top

^^^Growing up around body shops and fab shops, Im gonna go with Nomad up yonder.

But also, heres a cheap trick for all your chrome bumper guys out there. This doesn't work on fiberglass bumpers. Wonder why..... Joking.

Get ya about 6 square inches of alumin full, pour up a glass of ice cold coca cola and drop in the aluminum foil.

Scrub the shit out of the area that has rust with the aluminum foil. Pour on coke as needed. It'll take rust off of anything chrome/steel/chrome-alloy/chromoly/molybdenum.

I took some pictures with my cell phone camera since my real camera is broken. Unfortunately, my camera phone sucks and the damn pics won't upload right. Hope this one pic gives everyone a better idea of what I'm dealing with.

that doesn't seem too bad... you should be able to make that nicer with relative ease.
