Even though it will probably break before you get to use the mods, try a full exhaust system (will sound nice too), or an induction kit to help the engine breathe easier.

Take as much weight out as possible. E.g, rear seats, passanger seats, CD Player, Dashboard? Facia Panels?

If you want to go a bit faster, every time you go to start it, don't.Get out and walk to wherever it is you want to go. Should do the trick.

no seriously though, if you want to go faster put in a huge stereo and play music with a lot of bass. It should help. Oh and get a muffler that makes it sound like a chainsaw. Those things add like 300hp.

1.2L wow, and all my friends tell me my 2.7L engine is small.
Okay well my 2.7L is small but I can smoke my friends 5.7L Camero. Here's what I've done. First of course the basics (Intake, header, exhaust, intake manifold, agressive cams) let the engine breathe better. Then you need it to be able to "eat" better, get more fuel. Bigger injectors and higher capacity fuel pump. At this point I've got all this potential but still not enough muscle. This is where forced induction comes it, I bought a supercharger kit from Hyundai and installed this but then I had too much power for the drivetrain to handle at the drag strip. Bought me some wider tires, upgraded the clutch/flywheel, suspension and now I have a Hyundai Tuscani that runs high twelve second quarter miles, can beat a Silvia at the autoX and still drives me to work and back every day. My friend who's engine is twice the size of mine can't keep up even though he's done some tuning himself.
I did all of this on stock internals and drive the car every day safely still getting 27 miles per gallon.
You don't need a new car or a bigger engine. Just some money, time and tools. Besides, imagine the looks of Audi owners when your "measly" Clio shoots past them.. priceless. Don't listen to everyone and get a new car, no one said I could tune a Hyundai into a sports car eating machine but they always congratulate me when my Korean car leaves their Cameros, Boxters and S4s behind at the drag strip.
Keep your 1200, have some fun with it, you'll appriciate it more in the end.

fix go-kart pedals in it, or make a hole in the floor so you can push it along like the flintstones

Add a mast and then a sail to the car. You will definately be faster on the windy days.
