K & N Air Filter.. Will getting one go against my insurance policy?

I'm currently thinking of getting a K & N air filter for my Corsa B, i live in the UK, and i was wondering if it will go against my current insurance policy, or would i have to inform them? I'm pretty sure it's fine just to put it in and carry on as normal, yet, someone mentioned that it was modifying your car so you have to tell them..

However, isn't it really just a replacement part..

Cheers in advance. (Mainly for UK people- i'm with Norwich Union)

Wouldn't this inequiry be better suited for someone representative of the insurance company than a PORNSITE?

It's not a porn site, it's a car site. After all we have the car forum, don't we?

In the US this probably would not affect insurance coverage but would affect your warranty. Can't say for sure in UK.

pornsite??? where?
he posted in ... "Forum/Cars/Car Tuning and Styling" ;>

I have always had K&N filters, and have always had differing opinions about wether such things would effect the warranty. Fortunately, so far I have not had to argue it with anyone.

Here in the US we are protected by a law that basically states that items that need to be replaced by the consumer will not void the warranty.

Your first concern should be with the service personnel who service your vehicle - if their opinion is to not worry about it - then they will be on your side if there is an issue... if on the other hand their opinion is that it will cause problems - then watch out (and keep the stock filter handy just in case). Also make sure the manufacturer of the item is involved with any issues to back you up!

Funny, I'm going to buy one myself. K&N has very good filters, but I'm thinking Apexi. It won many tests and is dry filter against those wet filters.

In Finland your insurance doesn't change at all, why should it? You can put it there pretty safely.

Yeah it's just alot of UK insurers have a section which asks "HAVE U MODIFYED YOUR CAR" or something along them lines, and i'm wondering if replacing my air filter with a K&N one is classed as "modifying"..

Oh and Kanzen, as for you, you should know better with your amount of posts.. Love the way you make a sarcy remark, and then turn out like looking like a total cock. Nice one thanks for your help too.. *sigh*

well, u have two options, say nothing and have an accident/theft, and because of the un-notified modification the insurance company say you're not covered, or you inform them about it. easy choice really.

but i did hear a story on radio 2 the other day, a guy added a rear spoiler to his car, he phoned the insurance company to inform them, and they turned round and said 'sorry, we wont insure you anymore' - they considered him a boy-racer and therefore too high a risk.

if it was me then i'd contact them beforehand, check if it'll affect the policy/increase premiums etc.

Yeah i'm intending to do so, just thought i'd see if anyone on here had done the same, and if they had to make any changes to their policy, being a young driver insurance is enough as it is, so if it will affect the price in a bad way i dont think i will bother, however, they sound sooo nice! *edit @ Lankey, forgot to quote

Not true. This will not void your warranty. Yes, it has been tested in court. It was a pretty big deal.

Contacted the insurer, they've told me that if i were to fit a perofmance air filter such as a K&N model, then the policy price would be increased by 10%. I think this is atrocious, this means it would be an extra 80-85quid for myself. On top of the cost for the filter. And the lovely sounding engine with the 5 extra horse power or whatever it gives you is hardly worth that much imo. Psht, looks like i wont be getting one after all.

Man, that really sucks! As if the insurers are going to look under the engine themselves, to see what you have been doing. I feel sorry for you. Couldn't you get a policy with another company?

I wouldn't see why it would void any warranty, K&N filters are far better than any stock filter.

No it wouldn't, K&N is overated. Apexi Makes the best filter. I really don't think any aftermarket parts go against your policy. Your car has to have all ABS equiptment though, like steeringwheel with the airbag. Otherwise you'd risk voiding it.
