Jesse James is overrated actually. I know that's gonna piss a lot of people off but that's the truth. For one thing, the guy is really arrogant and thinks his shit doesn't stink. That's not cool. Secondly, if you know anything about chopper design outside of the few TV shows you watch, Jesse James is just one of many, many, guys that are doing the exact same kind of thing. Why does Jesse James work get so much attention as compared to another guy? Well, for one thing: Exposure and marketing. It's just hype. If Shaq O'Neil decided to buy Joe Shit's choppers instead of Jesse James' than all of a sudden Joe Shit would become the big chopper designer everyone was talking about. Take a look at Orange County Motorcycles. Among the chopper designers, the Tuttle family are laughed at and most bike builders can't believe they've become as huge as they are. The truth is that Jesse James and these guys steal ideas from each other and once you get to that level their bikes all start to look alike. It's like any art by any artist: It's all about hype and who's collection you're in.
Now, don't get me wrong: Jesse James is very talented and his bikes do look cool, but there are many chopper designers out there doing just as amazing shit and his attitude and opionion of himself far outweighs his actual skills. If you ask Chopper designers who THEY admire they'll usually say Chica or someone like Mike Pugliese who won the Daytona Beach Rat Hole competition this year. Ever heard of those guys? No? I didn't think so. It's all about hype. Jesse James has a cool name and a TV show and the others don't.
Agreed!
I don´t care about his name though. Orange County, and Jesse James are well known, and not for no reason.
agreed also tsweeney. I don't doubt it at all. It's who the media chooses to exploit as the new character. If it were someone else who was given a show, had a cool name, etc. we'd probably be rooting for him (or maybe her) also. It's a combination of marketing, advertising, promotion, and sales. Television seems to overly hype who's on at the moment although there are numbers of people out there doing the same thing.
That's kinda what i think of mtv's "pimp my ride." I've known people who do the same thing that entire shop does, on their own. It's just that shop happened to be selected over all the many other shops out there that do the same thing.
