Its sad to see, that when the new forum was created, there was not one single car thread the whole day. So I'll post a question I was thinking about.....
Can you change an automatic transmission to a manual transmission? how hard is it? I'm assuming it might be easier to change an automatic transmission to one of those BMW style SMG, but just wondering
well, depends on the car...on something old, like american muscle, it should be easy enough. however on a newer car it's a bitch, because everything is so tightly put together and you have no room for the gear shifter, etc.
like psyche said, it's real easy in older cars...
I converted a 70 El Camino from Automatic to Manual. It was a lot of work and I wound up getting in over my head and had to get some help, but it worked out in the end. Was actually fairly easy once I had someone who knew how to do it helping me. However like others have said...I would not even consider doing it on a new car. With all the on board computers and technology these days, I would think you'd really need to be top notch to pull that off...
well i drive an automatic citroën xm from 1992, the gearbox is a four speed saab box, ever since i got that i wanted a five speed gear box for even better gas mileage, but no such luck in finding one that fits... or i should swith to manual, which i'm not allowed to drive anymore...
so no options left for me there, unless buyin' a new mercedes with a seven gear automatic box...
i think i'll stick to my xm i guess...
You can not "literaly" change(modify) the transmission from one to another, you can possibly swap them out but physically making a manual automatically shift or and automatic capable of being manually shifted is implausible.

A buddy of mine pulled an engine/tranny swap in his rx7. took about a month but he got it done.
