Free VIN check?

Hey, I need to buy a new car and i want to check it fot accidents and shit. So can someone give me a site where i can check the VIN number without payment.(if such a free thing exist)
I tried to search Google but all the sites wanted money for the car history.

Carfax.com like sphtman said. usually have to pay but there are sometimes links floating around for free carfax reports. Just got to find them.
