This is a rant, so consider yourself warned.
On the whole, I have nothing against street rods, lowriders, and other customized vehicles: they're practical works of art and engineering combined, after a fashion. But if you're going to do that to a vehicle, especially one from the High Classic era (the mid '30s to World War II), go after a Ford, or if you must, a Chevy or Plymouth. Those Fords are a dime a dozen: you've seen one and you've seen them all.
But anyone who does that to a REAL classic--and I mean a Cadillac or Lincoln for starters--is a total ass who doesn't appreciate a classic car. And anyone who does that to a discontinued make--say, LaSalle, DeSoto, Packard, or Hudson--deserves to be beaten within an inch of his life with a tire iron. Not only are they destroying a classic, they're destroying irreplacable automotive history.
I've seen a few of these travesties on eBay--classic era Cadillacs and LaSalles tricked out--and I've made a point of calling out the perpetrators and telling them exactly what crimes they've committed in no uncertain terms. And I'll continue to do so. Go pervert a Ford all you like--that's about all the blue oval is good for--but leave the real classics alone unless you're going to restore them properly so they're in the same condition as when they rolled out of the showroom.
