Buying Seized Cars

Anyone ever buy or try to buy a seized car from an auction? I'm just wondering if it's bullshit. I'm watching an infomercial and it sounds pretty convincing. But the websites that hosts these make you pay around $40 to join. Anyone have good feedback on these things?

The only experience i have with this sort of thing is, repossessed cars that you can buy at auto auctions from the local repo man.

You can get really good deals sometimes and they don't make you pay any type of fees, just show up and bid on the car of your choice.

Only problem is that you buy them, as is, and you never know how they were taken care of or what might be wrong with them.

And typically if they get to the auction by repossession the person has beat the crap out of it before it got taken from them.

I bought a car at an auction for about $1400 below book price. When i got it home there was a lot of hidden damage mostly where the idiot former owner cut wires and tried to repair some parts he wasn't capable of.

After $400 and my/son's labor, mostly his, using salvage parts it is running fine (sound of knocking on wood)

Another one he bought at auction just needed cleaning up and a new battery. He made $600 reselling it.

If you're handy it's not a bad deal, but be wary.

To enter the auto auction around here you must be a licensed wholesaler, which if you look around are pretty easy to find. A guy I have been doing business with for years personally goes to the auction and checks out all of the cars you have in mind. The doors are all unlocked, and the keys are in the ignition. He rigorously checks these cars over and bids on the appropriate vehicles. Last year May I received my 2001 Galant for 2,000 under the 9,000 bluebook value. The wholesale charged me $500 over his bid and showed my the auction receipt.

web site wants you to pay for a listing of auctions in your area that is it. also be careful. my buddy bought a drug dealers car. turned out the dealer lived in the same city and saw the car one day and took it back at gun point. remember, most new cars come with 2 if not 3 keys and most of the time the auction will only give you one of the keys. that means there is 2 more key the previous owner has. if anything i would say buy a car from an auction in a state close to you or on the other side of the state you live in.

That is very informative. I did buy a car once at an auction, but the person had to be a dealership. He charged me $100 over cost in Murray Ky. It was the 2nd best car I ever had. I guess I got lucky knowing him. He was a great guy, who has since passed on at a very early age.
