For My Democrat Friends (of which there are few)

"Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, our best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all.

We also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the generally accepted calendar year 2008, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great.

Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. And without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishes. By accepting these greetings you are accepting these terms.

This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for herself or himself or others, and is void where prohibited by law and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher.

For My Republican Friends:

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Funny, I'm a republican, and was raised Catholic, yet I feel the federal government should not spend the taxpayers money on a theistic observance.

Politics & Religion are worse than oil & water.

when have they done that?
IMO, post had nothing to do with government or politics, but was a comment on how some people have a skewed POV. Of course, the thread has now been made political, and is probably going to be closed.

The thread became political the minute he generalized the feelings of political parties using misleading stereotypes to make a point.

As for your other question, the US federal, state and city governments spend millions, if not billions, of dollars on public displays of religious symbols and rituals including Christmas lights, trees, decorations and all the ancillary activities that go into putting up and operating said displays.

oh really?? I think you'd need to come up with some examples that go beyond "lights," which, in fact, don't have a specific significance. And trees?!?! Trees are "religious'?!?! See, this is the very kind of thing that leads to the original POV.

Is every tree in the nation religious? Of course not.

Just the ones they label as "Christmas Trees," such as the one currently sitting in the Blue Room of the White House. Add to that the municipalities that decorate for Christmas using the traditional "christmas" decorations, including the 4 candles of lent, images of Santa, Reindeer, Nativity Scenes, etc. Who do you think foots the bill for, as just one example, the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center, it's staging, transportation and police escort it receives during it's transportation into NYC?

Hint: It's not Santa Clause.

This did start out as a joke, I thought it was a funny way to see how peoples points of view could be taken differently, kinda generalized and not meant to offend anyone, or start a political discussion.

I will keep an eye on this, and if it becomes any more negative and serious i will delete it...

But for now take it light heartedly folks, and have a laugh at human nature
