Dude... Im sorry to say this to you.. But go to any Cybercafe and the gamers there will be "" all the time when there is something funny.
Here at my work (cybercafe in Denmark) some of the people here say lol when i tell them a joke..

People don't need to say it because in real life you can actually see and hear someone laughing. But I do hate myself for using it so much sometimes. It's just become a habit I guess. No other way to express laughter in text.

Same could be said about "owned". Of course it's only an internet thing. It's not like everyone carries pics in their wallets with "owned" written on them. I guess you could shout it when observing an owned situation. But it mostly just works on the internets.
