why do you make a dupe thread?
if you was not lazy you could have found out trough a serach in the forum that gif are the avy building blocks for newbies, pro people can compose multiple jpegs/other types of images in order to compile an avater.

1) READ the F.A.Q sheet
2) Don't make duplicate threads with the same material in it

# How do I get a picture under my username?
These small images are called Avatars. They are displayed below your username in all posts that you make. You can upload one when you are logged in by going to "edit profile" on top of every page, and then use the "Use avatar" upload field to upload your custom avatar. Note: the maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 10240 bytes (whichever is smaller)

If I remember correctly the only formats allowed are jpeg, and gif for avatars. Make sure that your not over the pixel or kb limit and it should work fine

It's actually better to read the info under the "edit profile" link since that info in the FAQ should be updated
In the avatar section right under the signature box it says "Avatars are small graphics that are displayed under your username whenever you post.
Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 270 by 100 pixels and 15360 bytes whichever is smaller (For Sponsor Members this is 35840 bytes)"
So thats 270 long and 100 wide and the 15360 and 35840 is roughly 15kb (non sponsor) and 35kb (sponsor)
Note to Diz - Update that portion of the FAQ
