Advertisements on this site

I was one of several people that mentioned how advertisements were not something welcomed when they were instituted.
I understand the money they bring in help keep this place going, but I always thought more efforts into self marketing would be better. I would even prefer a reduction of features unless a sponsor membership would be purchased over foreign ads.

I must reiterate my concerns, particularily my concerns over what clicking these ads can do.

Today a banner appeared when going to the forums, and can easily appear as not an advertisement, but a new set of features.

See the first attachment.

If you click on that advertisement, you are taken to a new site, which gives the impression that it is another youtube style site for porn. When you click on any of the vids there, you are prompted to install, yes, you guessed it spyware...

See second attachment.

Seekmo is a nasty bug from infamous zango.

I wanted to warn members and restate my point that taking money from some of these scumbag advertisers can lead to FUCKING up a lot of members' computers, actually driving them away from this site.

It is an unfortunate bummer that the ad agencies don't screen most of this shit out. Unfortunately until we can setup our own system for advertisers we're screwed too. Hopefully we will have a short term fix soon; a note above the ads to warn users about installing any software from an outside site.

Additionally, sometimes clicking No to install something, makes absolutely no difference. A lot of malwares screw you over no matter what.

Really, when you see something like that, you have to end task your browser immediately, and then scan your system with both a good antivirus and a good antispyware program. As I am doing now.

I would be more than happy to update my antimalware thread...

But I'm not going to invest the time unless it is made a sticky.

It originally was, but someone kept locking it and taking it down.

It's always good knowing that things work that take harmful things away from computers.

I think this isn't a good move from the company that supplies us our ads. We are trying to run a clean website without stuff that sucks up your computer.. but some companies somehow don't care how they get money

Exactly why I was disappointed to see these types of advertisements on WBW. Not a doubt in my mind, that if I clicked around on a few more, I would bump into all sorts of nasty bugs. If I used IE, I would be doubly screwed.

I have the same feeling about this, and that's why I have emailed the company that supplies the ads here. This is not the type of business I would like to run and if these actions keep on going I will have no choice but to remove advertising.

I run IE. I don't want to be single screwed and definately not doubly screwed. Am I safe as long as I don't go to Advert section?

RumDum, you are a sponsor member, you shouldn't be seeing any advertisements, so you shouldn't need to worry about it
