It’s Sbarro’s take on the the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR, a rare homologation special of which fewer than 40 examples were made by AMG and its racing partner HWA. As rare as that leaves the CLK GTR, the custom coachwork fitted to this show car make it stand out even further.
At the heart of the Espace GT1 sits a massive 7.4-liter V8 engine, instead of the 6.9-liter V12 fitted to the road-going CLK GTR or the 7.3-liter V12 that powered the racing version. Mounted amidships, it sends 450 horsepower to the rear wheels through a five-speed sequential gearbox. And weighing in at less than 3,000 pounds (1,350 kilograms), it’s said to be capable of reaching 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.9 seconds before topping out at 202 mph (325 km/h). Hardly mind-blowing figures by today’s standards, but certainly no slouch for the late 1990s, when even the Porsche 911 Turbo packed 402 hp, and even the hyper-exotic Ferrari F50 boasted “only” 513 hp.
