If all I've said is true, this is no LaSalle; it's a latter-day piece of machinery masquerading in a LaSalle's shell. And I should know: I own a 1940 series 5019 sedan, which is driven by the same engine that got dropped in when it was coming down the assembly line in November 1939.
My only wish is that I could buy this car myself and restore it properly, undoing all the damage done so far. The present owner has taken a piece of automotive history--there are perhaps 850 LaSalles left worldwide--and has ruined it. Do what you will, include customizing like this, to a Ford of the same era--lord knows they're as common as dirt, and customizing like this can only improve an otherwise pedestrian, uninspiring vehicle. But if you're privileged to get your hands on a LaSalle, make damn sure you restore the flathead V-8 to original condition, including re-porcelainizing the exhaust manifolds and painting the block Cadillac green, for starters. Don't ever--EVER customize it like this. Sell it instead to someone who'll do a proper restoration.
