Wounded Soldier Forced to Sleep in Car After Hotel Denies Him a Room

Submitted by Diode

September 4, 2008 - A wounded British soldier home from Afghanistan on sick leave was forced to spend the night in his car after a hotel refused him a room.

Corporal Tomos Stringer was told by staff at Metro Hotel, in Woking, that it was company policy not to accept members of the armed forces as guests. The 24-year-old had traveled to the Surrey town to help with funeral preparations for a friend killed in action.

It was so late that Cpl Stringer, who had broken his wrist jumping off an Army truck as it was attacked, had no choice but to sleep in his tiny, two-door car, arm covered in plaster.

Cpl Stringer, of 13 Air Assault Support Regiment, The Royal Logistic Corps, has now returned to Afghanistan, but his mother, Gaynor Stringer, from Criccieth, north Wales, told The Times that she is still furious about the incident.

“I’m very, very angry. It’s discrimination. They would never get away with it if it was against someone of ethnic origin,” she said.

She said they had received neither an apology nor an explanation from the hotel, which is part of a family entertainment center called The Big Apple and owned by a company called American Amusements.

"In America, they treat soldiers as heroes,” said Stringer, whose son joined the Army when he was 16 and has done multiple tours of duty in Iraq, Northern Ireland and Afghanistan.

The incident has prompted widespread condemnation from senior members of the Government, MPs, servicemen and their supporters.

Legions of army men and enthusiasts are rising up in the forums of the unofficial British Army Web site to call for a boycott of the hotel.

it could only be a british soldier that this would happen to.this country disgusts me with its politically correct attitude being scared to offend any tiny minority that might hold a grudge against wot we send our troops to fight for.the reasons are regardless.

we can say what we like about our american friends and wotever political policy their government pursues but they know how to take care of their boys.and for that i take my hat off to you.they are heroes.but our boys,in the eyes of government and some of the people in this country, are meer dirt.

these men and women are heroes to me.

im sure if this had happened in the states, the hotel would be burned to the ground and the owner lynched!! and rightfully so to!!

i was truely and deeply outraged when i read this a while back and im still pissed.
your a dickhead..

I don't agree.. I have several friends who are vets.. They might not have treated the vets properly, but in today's America even those against the war show proper respect to the soldier. I see it every day, as do the vets. You shouldn't let history's mistakes distort the beliefs of today..

Well said, support our troops whether they be American or British. They fight so we can stay free and safe! Remember that!

Whether or not I believe in the war they're fighting, I believe in a soldier. A country should honor, respect and shelter their soldiers. Period.

I did some research on the company that owns this hotel. The guy who owns it is named Albert Queida.

soldiers are just paid killers, no more no less. they get paid big bucks to do their job and they shouldn't bitch about having to actually do it

Unless soldiers have gotten a huge raise in last five years since I've been out they sure as hell don't make big bucks. Besides like 90% of military jobs (mos) have nothing to do with killing anyone, but you are entitled to your opinion so I'll leave it at that.
