Of course the key here is that it needs to be "not hokey" - "Credible."
Look up the word before you post some shitty ass link about fake moon landings or that fucking retard that thinks graphical blocks in the images of Mars are actually alien space colonies.
If you have credible evidence, I'd like to see it. If you're going to treat me like I'm stupid and will fall for something completely retarded and asinine, don't bother.
If you can bring credible evidence to the table, I'm all ears. I note a startling absence of any such evidence in the conversation so far, however.
Feel free to rectify that... If you can.

He's eight. His situation was unfortunate. I don't know of any child that gets smacked 1000 times in their lives.
I am aware of who pulled the trigger. That doesn't mean it's his "fault."
He's eight. What options did he have? Was he aware of those options? Why did no one notice bruises in all this time? How come no one spoke up for the child long before it reached this level? He'd obviously been smacked prior to starting a tally on his "1000 smacks."
What options does an 8 year-old have?
Yeah, he pulled the trigger. I don't remotely find an 8 year-old child under this set of circumstances to be the one to "blame" however.
Should he be locked up? I don't know. He's probably pretty dangerous and I don't know if he can be helped. Maybe he should, maybe he shouldn't. That I don't know.
What I do know, is that no 8 year-old is at "fault" for something like this.

Threats and harassment are illegal. It's true in real life, through the mail, on a phone or on the Internet. The manager is responsible for his employees, his products, and even his customers while they are on the clock or in his store.
He is going to lose this case (presuming we got the correct context of the case from this article).
The fines and costs are probably up to the court to determine and of course a trial is in order - but all the same, this one's kind of a no-brainer.
How much his franchise or their insurer will have to pay is hard to say, but that they're culpable... Nothing's for certain in a court of law, but this one's pretty close to a "sure thing."

I think it depends on someone's values.
In some people's opinions, enjoying sex, enjoying the giving and the emotional rush of satisfying someone serves an emotional as well as a physical service. At the end of the day someone who sells their brain-power is no different than someone who sells their physical assets. It's still trading your gifts for money.
Some people don't get hung up on sexual stuff. Some folks do. In her belief system this works, so more power to her.

I too (like others before me) don't agree. I think there were instances of it pertaining to Vietnam, but just as the American public learned what war was like first-hand because of the media, they also saw the darker side of normal life. A small handful of incidents becomes urban legend and is then recounted hundreds of times, sometimes with people claiming things that aren't true or that they didn't experience, but that's not a fun story to tell.
The media honed in on those stories just as they had the stories that portrayed Vietnam the way it was. This is something the militaristic folks always seem to love to point out, "The media took a few anecdotal situations and made them out to be much more."
Yet they then turn around and commit the same fallacy themselves.
If I had a nickle for everyone that claimed to be abused when returning from Vietnam I'd be a very wealthy man. If I had 5 dollars for each story that were true, I bet I could pay my rent on time next month, at best.

There's more ([ Link ] ). Just google "vatican alien life".
Um... I'd have expected far more compelling evidence that wasn't "hokey as shit in every instance" to have come out, and for at least some official government documentation and some credible heads of state instead of the whackos that we currently see coming forward.
No, I don't consider the things you propose as a "leak" to be a significant leak.
They lack compelling evidence, definitive evidence, enough evidence and the bottom line; credibility. A "leak" on something as substantial as a global cover-up on alien life-forms would certainly have more to bring to the plate than what we currently see.
As I said before, this is either a better cover-up than any ever even conceived of in the history of man-kind, or there is no cover-up.

I dunno. While it's taken them several thousands of years to admit that the Sun does not in fact revolve around the Earth (and actually, they never did acknowledge that, they just said they were sorry for what they did to Galileo), or to acknowledge that dinosaurs are real, or to acknowledge that gay people are in fact, people...
While those things take forever, the church is oddly responsive, flexible and adaptive to anything that is required for its own survival.
If alien life were discovered, they'd rewrite the rules, just like they have always historically done.

The one I couldn't identify was rather far away, but it was moving in and out of the atmosphere with the friction cone in every direction it would move. The other was last summer off the coast of N. Carolina, my radar went nuts, then I looked up into the night sky and saw the famouse 3 light formation, for about 4 minutes, hovering above my boat at about 3/4 of mile.
Yep, I believe, cause Ive seen.. It's rather silly to think we are alone.
The three-light formation has been reported to be associated with a classified aircraft called the Aurora.
Of course, the government says it doesn't exist, and I'm certainly not asserting that I've seen anything on it first-hand.
But I believe the craft to be genuine, and man-made, and it's the one that that light formation is attributed to. Ironically, it is said to generally serve in the ionosphere (half-way between our atmosphere and outer space), and can turn on a dime even while moving at enormous speeds.
It's been stated that it can move from horizon to horizon in under one minute as seen from the ground, and it can do so at its general working altitude, on the edge of our atmosphere - meaning the fucker is incredibly fast.
I've also read things about it that indicate that it may actually have a nuclear reactor on board the aircraft itself.
In any case, this is the craft I've heard the "three lights" attributed to most frequently and credibly.
As for aliens in our lives... I dunno, guys. As many of you have stated, much of the world could cope with that reality, or have already accepted it as reality. I don't see why there'd be a need to keep a secret of that nature at this stage unless the concern is that once the genie is out of the bottle, all kinds of shit will leak out as well (such as which tools which countries have found and mimicked).
Sure, the religious whack-os would be an issue, but they're already an issue, so I don't think that has much impact on things.
Is there a cover-up? I dunno. I don't believe there genuinely is one. I think there is some weird shit that goes on in the world - test aircraft, space ships, odd missiles, hicks that tie balloons to their lawn chair and fly 2500 miles out to sea...
I was in the military and was stationed at the headquarters for US Space Command and NORAD. I never once, in any way, shape or form, saw or even heard anything about the potential for extra-terrestrial life. It simply wasn't ever discussed. Not even hinted at.
I saw a lot of documents, and I had a great many candid conversations with people. This one was one that was never had.
If they're covering something up, they are doing the best damned cover-up in the history of mankind...
And our government simply isn't good at that shit, and neither is anyone else's government. I find the idea of a globally successful cover-up involving this many nations and this many people to be astoundingly preposterous.
Do I think we're alone in the universe? Of course not. Simple math and common sense dictates I'd be a moron to think that.
But do I think there's a cover-up? No. No chance in Hell. Only an equally moronic person would believe that this could be pulled off for this long, with this many people, and this many nations so well.
It's preposterous.
Is there life out there? Probably. Have our governments found it? Probably not.

Update 7/15/2008:
It appears the obituary for LRS may have been premature. John Rogers of the British Astronomical Association informs us that recent amateur images show there is still a persistent bright spot where the LRS was expected to emerge after passing between the GRS and Oval BA.
"It's slightly farther north than before, but probably now drifting back toward the GRS," notes Rogers. So the storm may yet be swallowed by the GRS, it has thus far escaped that fate. Stay tuned for further information.

That's a bunch of shit. It's not the brewer's fault that people are ignorant of laws prohibiting marijuana, so how he could be responsible for misleading them of the contents with that slogan is beyond me.
And yeah, it's a reference to marijuana. The same way Dicken's Cider is a reference, and the same way Calkin's Cider is a reference, or the popular slogan for Heineken, "Grab a Heine, you'll have a ball!" is.
That's stupid. He's got the moral high ground, and if he shows other instances (such as the ones I listed above) I bet he get them nailed too - but I doubt he can win his case and be allowed to use the slogan on his bottle caps.
But that's totally shitty. That's stupid.

I'm 34 years old. I weigh 135 pounds - tops.
When I was 17, I weighed 125 pounds. When I was in the military, working out constantly and taking in I shit you not, almost 12000 calories per day and working out twice per day, I managed to edge myself up to 150.
A month after I got out of the service, I dropped back down to 130.
I've had a 32 inch waist since I was in 8th grade.
When I eat now, even without caring about gaining weight or what have you, I eat four double-cheeseburgers from McD's, a Large fry, and a large soda. I can do this up to three times daily.
I never gain a pound.
Edit: I just weighed myself for the first time in over a year. 128 pounds. 3 pounds more than I weighed in junior high school.

Legalized and well-regulated prostitution is a way to control the practice, control disease, provide safety for those that ply the trade, and gain revenue for positive projects including education and economic help and training for those that are often left with no reasonable alternatives but to enter into the seedier side of life to earn money.
We can take a bad situation and make it into a good one, or we can continue to allow it to be something we refuse to acknowledge, and continue to see 12 year-olds working the clubs.

Trademark infringement - and potentially fraud. There are other issues at work here too. The crimes are clearly there - they're real.
But they could have done the exact same thing legally if they'd taken the proper steps, and these are obviously very talented artists (which is what a true car mechanic is).
Why they didn't go about it in a more legitimate manner is what has me curious - and there's some ironic tragedy there that doing it one way would make them heroes and give many people a great deal of joy - they'd be respected and revered. But doing it the way they did makes them criminals.
It's not the end result, it's the method by which they chose to get there.

The Music Industry’s Last Stand Will Be A Music Tax
Posted by Tarquin on 11:45 AM 01/15/2008
I'm a gamer. I am also a musician. I love music. I buy songs. I like the buck a piece option. I think that's fair. I'll happily pay one dollar per song to fill my iPod provided I only have to buy the songs I want. That's okay with me. I'm happy with this arrangement.
But the price of the iPod, considering it's really just a walk-man with a hard drive and that it's a total pain in the ass because they don't trust me, is also unappealing. It's a pain in the ass to manage my fucking music, and I've already bought Billy Joel's greatest hits like nine fucking times, I am NOT buying it again!
So I don't play with my iPod much, because it's a hassle and it pisses me off.
Until they do something to reconcile that, they won't get my money. I don't pirate songs either - so I'm not the guy they're after, but they've flat out driven me out of their market-place.

Math is a law of the universe. Music is based on math (which is why we often send songs instead of other things). Language is based on math. The world around us is based on math. There are certain "universals" that if a species is going to have the potential to contact us back in a way we also understand, they must inherently understand and be able to reconcile. The only way they can do that is if they understand math.
Fundamentally any species we can communicate with that can communicate back in a way we comprehend understands math.
Thus, math becomes the one language we know we both know.

The parents do have some culpability here. It's their kid. He obviously shouldn't have been left unsupervised.
Moving on...
"Do we ban all 16 year olds from the INTERNET? That would be a typical U.S. political response . . ."
Spoken like someone who is angry about some issue or another, and appeals to emotion rather than reason. Worse, you happen to be an American according to your profile, so I'm not sure where you got this idea from.
I happen to be an American as well, and that's not what most Americans would want to do. I can evidence this by pointing out that we do not have any such laws governing our Internet, so you're not only offensive, loud and provocative, but wrong too.
To the actual issue... I was well educated as a child. Very well educated in fact. I still did dumb shit. Things happen, parties get out of control. We don't mean for them to happen, we just don't yet have the wisdom of having been burnt to reel ourselves in at that age. We trust - I did at least. And we think it will be okay, or we think everyone will understand - and then we fuck up.
And there's no way to really stop it. People have to make mistakes to learn from them sometimes, and to learn their own limits and those of other people and their societies. Education surely helps, but we can't ram education down the throat of every teenager on every topic. "Drugs, alcohol, steroids, sex, guns, cars, suicide..."
How much "Education" do some of you think you can force into the typical 16 year-old mind (which typically doesn't give a shit what you have to say because he already knows it all anyway)?
That's not to say we shouldn't try. Education helps. Good parenting helps too. Perhaps the most reasonable thing to see here, is that this kid obviously shouldn't have been alone for that long to begin with.
Education both for children and for parents, plus parenting skills themselves would help - obviously.
I have some questions though too. How come the police didn't break up the party or start breaking it up when there were only 100 people? How come the neighbors waited for it to come into their yards before they realized the kids were being rowdy?
How come the neighbors didn't have the number of the parents and child that lived next door? How come this kid didn't call the police himself? Why does myspace allow this type of thing to happen? Certainly they're under no legal obligation to police their site, but I run web sites and I certainly do think I have a moral and ethical obligation to try to help where I can.
I know it looks simple. "Dumb kid. Let's bash Americans and solve it all through education."
But it's not. This was a group effort, and there are no easy answers.

Suburban sex parties draw complaints
Posted by Tarquin on 07:53 PM 12/10/2007
In this case, I agree with the town. If my neighbors were holding massive (100 or so guest) football parties once a week I'd get pissed too. This despite that I love football.
If they were making money off of it, even worse. I don't want a sports bar 50 feet from my door.
I agree that this isn't really about the nature of the business. The fact of the matter is it's being run as a business, and it's affecting the freedom and rights of the neighbors.

Huh.

Oh well, back to poker I guess.

Not a problem.
It will sell 1 Million copies before it is released.
I'll take bets against it right now. Put your money where your mouth is. I'm up for it. Post here.
My wager: There will be 1,000,000 copies or more of this game before its official release date.
Anyone that wants to take my bet, step up.
State your terms and your proposed wager. I intend to pay, and I intend to collect, so keep the bets within the realm of reason. Non-monetary terms are negotiable (pictures of you in a dress for example).
Human race will 'split into two different species'

Even if someone tried it would fail. Look at races and their continued integration today.
Insane marry and breed sane. Mexicans breed whites. Whites breed asians.
It seriously would take a concerted effort to pull off, and even then there'd be deviation. Some ugly people have gorgeous kids, and vice-versa.
The dude's on crack. Even if we were all in on it together, the chances that we could actually pull it off (especially for 100 straight years) is pretty damn preposterous.

in fact a lot of the people i knew were to turn 17 the year they graduated, which would make them 13 when they got into 9th grade.
7th or 8th grade? that would make then anywhere between like 11 or 12, MAYBE 13. kids should not be having sex at 11 or 12.
your math is way off.
I think you went to different schools than I did. First, not everyone is 18 on the dot when they graduate. We had people that were 17 to 19 graduating. Sometimes as young as 16 if they skipped a grade or something.
We graduate at grade 12 in the states, so let's presume your math is right and everyone graduates at 18. 18 minus 4 is.... 14. Meaning a 12th grader is 18, and thus an 8th grader is 14.
Which is exactly what I said.
So no. My math isn't off.

You guys are being a bit harsh. 14 is 7th and 8th grade as someone pointed out before. Do you have any idea what kind of shit my friends and I were pulling at that age?
Granted, we didn't do it in the middle of a classroom. We didn't trust our peers to not tell enough to do that. We did it though, just other places.
Not saying that makes it okay. Just saying we did it too.
WWE suspends TEN superstars
Posted by Tarquin on 10:05 AM 09/03/2007
I think it's errant to presume that since your case was legit, Vermin, that these others are as well.
It's obvious to God and everyone that the WWE is full of juicers, and it's not because they need the drug to repair their lung tissue.
You're mixing apples and oranges, my friend.
You're also blaming the feds for the suspension of these wrestlers when it was in fact, the WWE that suspended them, not the feds.
You're right about there being several inaccuracies here, but most of them are your own creation.
As far as the WWE is concerned, I agree they need to take responsibility for their own role in the behaviors and in the affect they have as role models on others.
Entertainment is a sport, sport is entertainment. They do stunts, they do tricks. To me, even if it's fiction it's still a sport because not everyone can get up there and do the things with their bodies that some of these performers do.
In either case though, the fact that the industry is flooded with roids is a no-brainer and it's about God damned time the pressure mounted on the WWE enough to do something about it.

"My father is a numismatist and knows of Nick Bruyer - notice he says that the 'find' is unprecedented - not the coins. Many professional coin collectors and dealers already have coins from colonial England and America - they are not that old. Perhaps some dealers may purchase the gold at $650-800 per ounce since thats the market value, but no serious professional in his right mind is going to pay $1000 for a silver coin when there is 500,000 out there and the price of silver is at $16 an ounce. These journalists will believe anything they're told..."
Historical value adds to intrinsic value. A 20% mark-up on the prices for the story that goes with them is fairly plausible.

I agree whole-heartedly.
he may be a perv for kiddies, maybe not.. really though, in a setting with little kids, the mere suggestion to a young girl to take her clothes off for a favor in return is not only in bad taste but also grounds for blacklisting in the children's community...

Alcoholism isn't always based on quantity. It's also based on consistency. However, that's moot.
He was an alcoholic and as part of the job drank 3 beers a day, then was given one when he was done for the day as well.
What do you MEAN I'm not going to die?
Posted by Tarquin on 10:16 AM 05/09/2007
i mean he did rely on THEIR information the supposed experts?
Health professionals promise to do the best they can, follow the guidelines, and make the best diagnosis possible.
They do not promise to be perfect. That's not reasonable. If they followed the proper procedures and did the best they could but it still resulted in a mis-diagnosis, that's not their fault. They're not incompetent, there's just not a way to distinguish the two issues (his inflamation versus cancer) very well yet.
A lot of science goes into the medical field, but for all that science it's still very much a mystery. A lot of the science is applied in such a way as to make it a "regimented art."
It's not a series of yes and no switches. It's science applied in a complex world of variables that may or may not have a generally desired affect.
They used all reasonable judgment (from what we can see here) when making the diagnosis, and that's really all we can or should expect a health care professional to do.
Brewer must pay alcoholic beer taster
Posted by Tarquin on 10:10 AM 05/09/2007
Wouldnt you WANT alcholics to taste your beer?
No, because most genuine beer drinkers (like me) are not alcoholics. As with anything else, too much of it taints the pallet and makes any information gleaned null.
Also, there are moral, ethical, and legal implications in attempting to cater to alcoholics. It's on par with forcing convicted sex offenders to work in daycare.
And what if you were to have people sign off stating they were alcholics prior to tasting the beer? Again, alcoholics have a messed up pallet to begin with. Most people don't really want them testing their beer. They're not representative of the populace.
Also, if I sign off stating that I am a cocain addict prior to working at the codine plant, does that alleviate someone from allowing me open access to the powdery goodness?
shouldnt that get a company off? i mean.. personally it would seem to be GOOD buisness to have alcholics taste your beer... isn't that who you would want drinking it?
No... Again alcoholics sport a different taste-bud response than regular Joe. Also, alcoholics don't account for the majority of beer sales - most alcoholics go towards other liqours. Weekend Joe is who buys the most beer, so that's whose input is actually desired.

Well, the company does have an obligation to prevent such issues.
People do drugs. If a company that makes opium lets its employess, or worse encourages them, to continue to dope up at their expense, is that not "their bad?"
Whether this guy was or wasn't an alcoholic before doesn't matter much. They worsened his condition and had no safe-guards in place for such circumstances. That's the verbatim definition of "negligence."
What do you MEAN I'm not going to die?

They didn't tell him to go on a spending spree.
He gave his stuff away, he can probably get most of it back.
I don't really see how they're to blame unless there's some reason they should have diagnosed him differently.

It's not actually "Facing East" that matters. It's facing Mecca.
Not facing Mecca is considered disrespectful and if I recall right it degrades the value of the worship.
