Apple Threatens iTunes Shutdown over Royalty Dispute

Apple has threatened to shut down the iTunes music store if an obscure three-person board appointed by the Librarian of Congress increase the royalties paid to publishers and songwriters by six cents per song.

The Copyright Royalty Board is scheduled to hand down its decision on these rates by Thursday. As part of their general muscle-flexing of late, music publishers asked the board to increase the royalties paid to publishers and songwriters for the sale of digital downloads from 9 cents to 15 cents per song.

Apple -- which has mightily resisted tampering in any way with its 99 cent price point for tracks -- said that if the rate hike goes through and the labels refuse to absorb the entire resulting increase, the iTunes music store will become unprofitable.

And, Apple says, it likes making money.

"If the [iTunes music store] was forced to absorb any increase in the... royalty rate, the result would be to significantly increase the likelihood of the store operating at a financial loss -- which is no alternative at all," wrote Apple iTunes vice president Eddy Cue in a statement filed with the board last year, according to Fortune. "Apple has repeatedly made it clear that it is in this business to make money, and most likely would not continue to operate [the iTunes music store] if it were no longer possible to do so profitably."

Out of each 99 cent song, Apple currently pays artists and labels an estimated 65 to 70 cents per song, 9 cents of which they currently pass on to publishers. According to Apple, the 66 percent increase in publishing royalties to 15 cents per song requested by the National Association of Music Publishers (NMPA) is too much for the company to bear.

I wouldn't buy most of what Wal-Mart sells anyway since most of it is the "copy someone else's music, dub in my own piece-of-shit lyrics (which naturally don't match the original music at all) and sell a millon copies to some stupid fuckin' brats" variety, nor am I willing to pay twenty bucks for "classic" albums that are NOT remastered and/or re-released. I'm also "old-school" and already have most of the music I want anyway, plus I've no problems with finding and buying high-quality cassette tapes with the music I want (for a lot less than what groups like Metallica and the RIAA neo-Nazis want me to pay) and converting 'em to MP3 format, so the greedyguts assholes at the RIAA can kiss my sphincter for all I care.

I'd love to know howinthehell the quack doing this "chop job" determined that the guy had cancer without doing a fucking biopsy first (I'm no doc, but I've been auond 'em long enough to know goddamn well that no surgeon worthy of the title would pull this shit WITHOUT perfoming one, especially if he/she is NOT a cancer specialist; most tumors/growths are NOT malignant AND there is no way in hell that ANY surgeon could tell just by looking, and it's a safe bet that the guy - or his wife - would've noticed if there actually was one.

It sounds more like the stupid doc fucked up somehow (and caused a permanent "loss of function" or "reduced perforrmance) and literally tried to dispose of the evidence. Normally I'm not a big fan of lawsuits (especially since they're usually of the "two dollar cup of hot coffee spills on stuipd woman's/man's lap while driving" variety", but this is one time where I'd say "sue the livin' fuck outta the faggots!" (and I hope they do).
