I mentioned shale oil.

The point is that it is a viable alternative to be investigated. If every new technology were shunned because it's not currently economically or environmentally viable there would be no innovation or increases in efficiency. So, like I said, it's something that needs to be looked into.

Generally, I'm of the opinion that when business comes to the conclusion that saving energy use through efficiency increases and technological innovation is cheaper than using it they will lead the move away from the use of oil, leaving demand for it very low, thus leaving the price for certain, oil-specific, products relatively cheap.

Oil will get to a point where we can't afford it, and it will result in the market adapting another energy source to make cars work. The world won't end, and there won't be an anarchy state of the world. Think logically, it will happen over a long period, probably after most of us die. Let your kids deal with the end of the world, like your parents did.

I agree with most of this. (The part I don't, or more accurately, don't find likely or feasible, should be evident)

Bike are the future. Don't fight it. As for the earlier definition of how crude oil is made, was false. It's not plant life that forms into oil, but that of sea creatures. Most oil rich areas were formerly covered in water, like the middle east which was under water at the formation of Gondwanaland. I think it was Gondwanaland. However, it's just mostly sealife thats been compressed into a liquid form over the course of hundred of thousand years.

I also recommend going solar, the suns going to be there for billions of years, lets take advantage of that!

Bikes are not the future. Hydrogen fuel cells that produce water vapor as the only byproduct of combustion are the future. The future isn't reverting to the past, it's progressing.

My car is fueled by porn. Although I think there is a shortage of that natural resource it's not going to stop me from racing my Vette on the streets.
  Take your top off.

There could be a time in this progression during the transition from oil based fuels to green fuels where only the wealthy can afford to use cars and the rest of us will be using bikes/motorbikes and public transport.

Maybe, but it's very unlikely, IMO.

If such a scenario were to start to occur, two things would likely happen:

First, the economy of the country would collapse, as all consumer spending would go toward non-discretionary items, basically food and transportation fuel. A collapse in the economy, or severe recession, of the magnitude that would be caused by the inability of people to move would result in a deflationary environment which would, by its very nature, cause the prices of these commodities to decrease.

Second, private enterprise would find alternatives. Significant moves in the direction of alternative fuels have not really taken hold because it has not, up until now, been economically feasible for such a paradigm shift in the transportation infrastructure of the world. As long as oil is relatively cheap it doesn't make sense for people to switch to some other product. When, however, oil becomes prohibitively expensive consumers then turn to the market to find alternatives, at which point it becomes cost-effective for big business to switch their R&D budgets and production to alternatives.
